Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sent U.S. President Donald Trump a letter calling for a swift conclusion to NAFTA negotiations and pledging his wish to reset relations between the two countries, Mexican officials said on Sunday.
Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sent U.S. President Donald Trump a letter urging a swift end to NAFTA negotiations and suggesting the leaders could work well together due to their shared anti-establishment style, Mexican officials said on Sunday.
The letter was delivered during a recent meeting in Mexico with senior U.S. officials, and details were disclosed once Trump had received it, said Lopez Obrador, a leftist who won Mexico's July 1 presidential election in a landslide.
Marcelo Ebrard, the president-elect's proposed foreign minister, read a copy of the letter at a news conference with Lopez Obrador that said the incoming administration's aim was to "start a new chapter in the relationship between Mexico and the United States, based on mutual respect."
Trump has had harsh words for Mexico on trade and immigration throughout his presidency.
Despite their contrasting political views, Lopez Obrador indicated he was optimistic about his working relationship with Trump.
"I am encouraged by the fact that we both know how to do what we say, and we have both faced adversity with success," Lopez Obrador wrote. "We manage to put our voters and citizens at the centre and displace the establishment."
Lopez Obrador, who takes office on Dec. 1, also called for the countries to redouble their efforts to wrap up talks to modernize the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada....

This guy wants to re-do NAFTA, control immigration and defeat the drug cartels. He doesn’t sound like such a leftist to me.
Go to the reality of the situation. Drug cartel killings are tearing up middle-class Mexico. It’s topic number one. The immigration problem? There’s mounting evidence that most of the border crossings are non-Mexicans (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, etc). On the agricultural front, no one says a lot but this is probably an area that Trump would easily allow to remain in place with some type of NAFTA agreement (no tariffs). The big disagreement is with international companies that have come into Mexico and using cheap labor and easy access to the US market. Some access to the US market could be achieved, with tariffs being part of the long-term solution.
Are you kidding? During his election this moron was telling Mexicans to flood in here for a ‘’better life’’ because Mexicans have a ‘’human right’’ to just walk on in here. Screw him. He see’s the Trump Train leaving and he wants to be on it.
Foreign leaders respect strength in America’s presidents. Our own American leftists are busy ridiculing Trump, but the leaders of China, Mexico and other nations who’ve gotten used to rolling over American presidents aren’t laughing - they’re facing the reality that they’re dealing with someone who isn’t going to back down. It’s been a long time since we had a man in the White House who inspired respect (and maybe some fear) in the leaders of other nations - at least since Reagan.
Since being elected he has offered to work with PDJT to stem illegal immigration. He now says that Mexico should be a place that the citizens don’t want to leave.
A Lefty with a brain is rare, but I guess it does happen.
One of the reasons for NAFTA was to provide Mexico with more jobs so their citizens would stay home. It didnt work.
I bet Trump is telling him if he wants some version of NAFTA, he needs to stop the illegal alien flow.
Perhaps he made a campaign promise he didnt intend to keep
He sees the Trump Train leaving and he wants to be on it.
Likely so. If it motivates him in a better direction, Im ok with that. But we better have rock solid agreements/treaties with MX, with penalty clauses.
They’re calling to make a deal.
Just like President Trump said they would.
Best President evah!
Man, this guy changes direction fast. Wonder if it will convince Mexicans to finally fix their country. Probably not.
