LaVar Ball: 'If you want to be a pro athlete, you don't need to spend 50% of your time in class'

Full title: LaVar Ball: 'If you want to be a professional athlete, you don't need to spend 50 percent of your time in class'

LaVar Ball’s Junior Basketball Association has officially kicked off, and he’s out promoting it constantly.

Now, the idea behind his league is solid. It provides his sons, LiAngelo and LaMelo — and countless others — an opportunity to play competitive basketball outside of the NCAA while they make a push to play professionally. It also offers athletes a chance to make money while doing it.

Except in a recent interview with SBNation’s Ricky O’Donnell, LaVar gave a weird piece of advice: One doesn’t need an education if they want to be a professional athlete.

“If you want to be a professional athlete, you don’t need to spend 50 percent of your time in class, which you’re not gonna use anyway, and 50 percent trying to play ball,” LaVar told SBNation. “Now you can be 100 percent in. If you really that guy, this is the way to go. If you’re only going be in college for a semester anyway, if you really that guy.”

KY had been operating a one and done program. Move to the pros after 1 year. Don’t know how many players did that

Body and mind, Ball. Body AND mind. And true, college is not for everyone. But college sports are for college kids.

Let the talented-enough ones go straight to the pros. College sports SHOULD be for STUDENT-athletes, not those with neither the background, intelligence or study ethic just because they can play.

It would drastically cut down on the college scandals too, personal, academic, eligibility, admissions. Seldom mentioned is the scandals mostly involve athletes who never took academics with much sense of seriousness

'if you really that guy"

Find the verb.

He just left out a form of the verb "to be"--probably a sign that Russian was his first language.

Shaquille O'Neal is great. He's anall-around good guy, and smart. He not only ensured his son graduated, but he himself not only graduated from college, but subsequently earned an MBA. He also -- no joke -- earned a Doctorate in Education. He's also served as a Sheriff's Deputy.

If you really that guy, this is the way to go.

And if you're not really that guy you get out of school with no skills and no education and no future. But you will vote Democratic, so I guess this path to failure is OK.

Just keeping the slaves on the liberal plantation.

He’s basically right. The overwhelming majority of NCAA Division I basketball players are unqualified for and uninterested in the academic programs offered by the colleges and universities that they attend.

They don't have time.

Go to college on a football scholarship and tell coach you want to major in mechanical engineering. See how long you stay on the team. If these guys aren't traveling to games, they're at practice. If they're not at practice, they're at the gym. Homework? Studying? Ain't nobody got time for that!

There's a reason athletes major in underwater basket weaving. There's not time for much else.
