Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on Thursday that President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin shouldn't hold additional one-on-one meetings until the administration details what happened during Monday's Helsinki summit.
Until we know what happened at that two hour meeting in Helsinki, the president should have no more one-on-one interactions with Putin. In the United States, in Russia, or anywhere else," Schumer said in a statement.
Talk of a second meeting comes days after the two leaders met one-on-one for two hours in Helsinki. Trump sparked widespread backlash during a press conference after the meeting by refusing to condemn Moscow's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
He then tried to walk back his comments on Tuesday saying he accepts the intelligence community's assessment that Russia interfered in the election but added that "other people" could have meddled as well.
Senators in both parties said this week that they were largely in the dark about what, if anything, Trump and Putin agreed to during their closed-door session.
Democrats have used Trump's rhetoric in the wake of the summit to question what deals the presidents might have made in Helsinki and if Russia has "damaging information" on the president.
"What could possibly cause President Trump to put the interests of Russia over those of the United States? Millions of Americans will continue to wonder if the only possible explanation for this dangerous behavior is the possibility that President Putin holds damaging information over President Trump," Schumer said earlier this week.
Despite backlash over the Helsinki, Trump has touted the sit-down as a success and signaled earlier Thursday that he wants to have a second meeting.
"The Summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media. I look forward to our second meeting so that we can start implementing some of the many things discussed, including stopping terrorism, security for Israel, nuclear," Trump said in a tweet.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Thursday afternoon that the president has asked national security adviser John Bolton to invite Putin to the United States.
"President Trump asked @Ambjohnbolton to invite President Putin to Washington in the fall and those discussions are already underway," she said in a tweet.
None of Schumcky’s business.
And no soup for you!
Really?!! Since when does a dem dictate to this President!
Trump is inviting Putin BECAUSE of what the reation has been... so keep it up, schumer!
You ain’t da boss, Schmucky.
He told him that he’d have more more flexibility after the election.
More treason by Democrats.
Trump should tell Schumer to keep quiet and stop interfering in international, relations. If it were up to me, id Issue a gag order on this prick.
STFU you pig Schumer. Trump is POTUS and YOU are an ass.
Schumer is acting like a guilty control freak. Putin is doing the equivalent of finding 800 FBI files and handing them to Trump, with Hillary & Co. prints all over them.
Everything liberals say is immediately quoted in this nasty Democrat publication and posted on Free Republic. You would think we were DU at how often these sorry articles are posted here.
So NOW Schumer can tell the POTUS what to do!!! OMG I am just loving this, who in the HELL does Schmucky think he is?????
Dear Schmucky, kiss my ass..signed..the American people
You need to know what the other side is doing.
That’s why conservatives lose. You don’t look to see what the other side says.
That’s why conservatives lose. Focus.
Did somebody appoint Chuckie Lord Marshall of the planet Earth?
Chuck Schumer and HRC share the same pitcher of Kook Aid, on a regular basis! Sad Man!
The Deep State seems massively concerned about the possibility of Trump and Putin meeting behind closed doors. Methinks it’s because Putin knows things that Trump needs to.
