Once again, Donald Trump has raised questions about Americas commitment to NATO, this time in an interview with Fox Newss Tucker Carlson.
Carlson asked a variation of the typical question about American military commitments overseas: Why send our kids to fight in obscure foreign lands?
Membership in NATO obligates the members to defend any other member thats attacked. So lets say Montenegro, which joined last year, is attacked. Why should my son go to Montenegro to defend it from attack?

Pearl Harbor wasn’t even in the United States.
Those two skyscrapers in NYC would have come down eventually anyway, especially after GWB planted those bombs in them hisdamself.
Excellent points!
Because if we didn’t violate all of the agreements we made, like promising NATO wouldn’t ever expand, and having Soros do color revolutions in Ex-Soviet States, particularly Ukraine, they wouldn’t have done it.
Neocon warmongers like Breedlove and Nuland wanted Ukraine to kick the Russian navy out of Crimea which would have crippled their Black Sea Fleet. Do you think we would have acted any differently if our navy was being crippled?
Neocons have a pathological hatred of Russia and want to grind it into the dust.
I watched Tucker last night. I want to like him, but like so many other shows on Fox (the only place to go that is not all anti-Trump), Tucker can become just a shout down match between he and his guests.
That said, when the shouting was over, the main point was that NATO used to be half the number of nations it is today, and each time the club is made bigger, it becomes both riskier in terms of treaty obligations, and watered down in terms of shared defense costs.
Nato was founded to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down. Well, the Germans have figured out how to keep themselves down with their migrant policies. Russia has meddled in the region, but we have too. Look at how Wesley Clark almost sparked open warfare with Russia during the Kosovo campaign. That is what Trump is talking about - pushing Nato into areas that are of no strategic importance in such a way that could spark a much larger war.
Can we impeach President French?
Hey National Review, if we wanted Northrup Grumman’s opinion we would just ask them.
Yes, We Should Fight for Montenegro
No we shouldn’t. NR is a cesspool of Never Trumper morons.
We do not have a treaty with the Ukraine that guarantees our coming to their defense in the event they are attacked. That's why.
If it is not then we need to withdraw from NATO.
I visited Montenegro back in May. Beautiful country and gracious, hard working people. My local tour guide pointed out that Russians have purchased most of the prime real estate there. So, in essence, Russia already owns Montenegro.
The EU has tried/is trying to unseat an American president.
What the heck more do we need to know.
NATO isn’t an alliance any more. It’s a cabal.
No, no we shouldn’t.
One need only to look at France and the UK to realize how the sacrifices made by the US in WWI and WWII have been blithely and completely pi$$ed away.
Of any secrets are going to Russia, they are coming from the Turkey government.
OK Mr. French, your son goes first
I play in a hockey league with a lot of vets who were in Iraq and Af-Pak. They are all living their lives and moving forward, but I hear a lot of stories, see a few visible scars and learn a lot more about other men and women who really suffered some grievous wounds.
Every one of them would suit up again if America needed them, but I fear to God that someone like David French would be the one asking.
YOU WIN THE THREAD!
Well for starters, the Ukraine was once part of the USSR, from what I read, Ukrainians seem to like being Russian.
To send one American solider to fight for the territorial dispute of Ukraine....it's their problem and has been regardless of government.
In a pep talk to his Montenegrin Communist Partisan followers during WWII, Joseph Tito told them that they were on the winning side because the combined population of Montenegro and the Soviet Union was 180 million.
Though it has been relegated to the dustbin of "History", George Washington's warning about foreign alliances and entanglements certainly applies. World War I began due to foreign entanglements in the Balkans from countries that really didn't want to get involved, resulting the vast majority of fighting and casualties endured by other countries far from the Balkans.
The President is absolutely correct in posing the question whether we should shed American blood, riches and risk the destruction of our Country over Montenegro. If russian, or someone else's tanks roll in, there will be no time to debate, only react. The thing that perplexes me about this whole issue is that he is being criticized by the group (dems) who don't support America abroad in war or peace and who won't even stand for the Anthem.
