The California Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in favor of opponents of a plan to divide California into three, saying the measure should not appear on the November ballot.
The court instructed Secretary of State Alex Padilla to refrain from putting the measure before voters pending further review, because significant questions have been raised regarding the propositions validity, and because we conclude that the potential harm in permitting the measure to remain on the ballot outweighs the potential harm in delaying the proposition to a future election...
The environmental nonprofit Planning and Conservation League and political attorneys alleged that breaking up the state is a revision of the state constitution and requires support by two-thirds of the California Legislature before it can go to the 2018 ballot.

Confederates lose again.
However, Ca and NYS....it may favor the Republicans.
Just as well. The proposed division was ridiculous. 2 states with the coastal strip in one and the rest of the state in the other would make sense - not the plan they proposed.
If any states deserve to break apart, it should be downstate IL and upstate NY.
You’re right of course ... also, because this ultra-far-Left Court took a lesson from Brexit ... in every respect.
Roger that.
Sure would like to lance the festering boils on the corners of PA too.
Darn. If Cali moves first, we can split Idaho six ways and Wyoming ten. That’ll ‘larn ‘em.
Court says: “You people don’t know what you’re doing. DENIED.”
Three great big seed pods.
That’s good. The thought of 4 more senators from California is frightening
There was never a doubt the politicians/political “judges” in Kali were never going to allow their power to be diminished by two-thirds.
Florida south of Orlando........................
Just saying, perhaps 90% of the signatories were Democrats from the coast.......and that didnt take into consideration of the WHOLE REST OF THE STATE. (But Dems are like that. Ignore those that dont agree with you and put a 3-State initiative on the ballot that would totally favor the Left.....in all 3 states.)
While we’re at it:
Lop Miami off of Florida
Occupied Northern Virginia off of Virginia
Portland off of Oregon
Seattle off of Washington State
Detroit off of Michigan
Those cities/areas do not fit at all in the states they are in along with Chicago in the rest of Illinois and Pittsburg/Philly in the rest of Pennsylvania and NYC in NY State.
Of course they will not obey what any court says and do it anyway.
California is above the law.
What actual harm comes from anything appearing on a ballot? Even if it gets a majority of votes, there is no operative effect unless and until many other things happen... but that first "if" is pretty large as well. How can the CA SC decide that the appearance causes actual harm in and of itself?
I live in Occupied Norther Virginia and I agree!
I’d love to see Minnesota split.
One state would be blue - the inner cities of Minneapolis/St Paul plus the first and maybe some second ring suburbs.
One state would be red - essentially all the rest of the state minus the Iron Range a few cities like Mankato and Winona.
I did not realize California courts took plebiscites seriously.
