This graphic shows left & right, liberal vs conservative, blue vs red, from a US perspective.

Rodent Removal Day....
In this crazy political season I decided a little religion might be appropriate so here is a short Bible study.
Remember what Jesus said: ‘Goats on the left, sheep on the right’ (Matthew 25:33).
Jesus also told Peter that if he wanted to catch fish do it from the right side of the boat. They did and filled the boat with fish.
John 21:6 (NIV) ... He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
Origin of Left & Right...I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the right” and Liberals are called the “left.
By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible: Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV) - “The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left. Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen.
It surely can’t get any simpler than that.
Spelling Lesson:
The last four letters in American..........I Can
The last four letters in Republican....... I Can
The last four letters in Democrats........ Rats
End of lesson! ...Test to follow on November 6, 2018.
Remember, November 2018 is to be set aside as rodent removal month.
Ha! That’s GREAT! Love the spelling lesson! (Did you come up with that? VERY clever in any case!)
As for the Left vs Right origin, I thought that it had to do with the French Revolution, and how the various parties arrayed themselves in relation to the King at the National Convention. The less radical revolutionists, the Girondistes, who were more sympathetic than their opponents to the Royalist cause, arrayed themselves to his right, as is traditionally done for guests of honour. The Montagnards, who later evolved into the very radical Jacobin faction, arrayed themselves to the King’s left. (If one accepts that, it is very, VERY accurate as the Left today DOES closely resemble the Jacobins!
That said, now that I have heard it from you, I accept the Bible as the REAL source!
I don’t believe this chart. Nice graphic, but incorrect.
Just take the “aggression” and “militant”. Then think about who was president in this country at the start of any major war. Yes I know that declaration of war comes from congress, but I think the evidence is enough to prove that the graph is incorrect in this regard.
I have been reading Military History since I was 13 and a very good friend gave me this chart many years ago.
If you read about that debacle... it will make your hair stand up!
Amazing
To me, that was the striking thing about that graph...you don’t even NEED to read about it to understand at a gut level EXACTLY how horrible that must have been, how many frozen bodies, people dying of wounds in the snow, the trails of blood, the privation in the elements, the starvation, the hopelessness and the humiliation...
422,000 going in and 10,000 coming out. Just imagine that.
Line up all those 422,000 men, count off 1 to 42 and begin at one again, then have all the men with the number one assigned step forward, and say “All the rest of you are going to be sentenced to a horrible freezing death, or a gunshot or bayonet death if you are lucky.”
Just wow.
Unbelievably, SOME of these veterans died natural deaths in their eighties. After all their privation, wounds, etc. they died in their beds. Accounts exist from veterans in all ranks... and I have to say, some of the best are from the lower ranks. I have kept most of the books because some were so hard to find... and I re read them occasionally.
Never saw that one before.
Graphic is defective on face value:
It uses the ABC-1980s-initiated Red color for the Right.
I am going to read up on that...thank you for the suggestion.
You will become addicted to that stuff.
That period of military history is sort of like the golden age of ‘militarism’.
It’s exciting, splashy, wildly entertaining, compelling, dramatic, etc. What really makes all this so entertaining IS that you are reading about ‘real’ people who recorded factual events along with their own personal experience.
If you never read a BOOK that actually put you on the edge of your seat, you will with this stuff. You even get attached to personalities! Those were fire eating, drunk- on-glory characters.
I watch films about ‘adventure’/ ‘history’/ ‘ fiction’, etc. and NONE compare to actual recorded events and real people of that period.
Directors squander millions trying to convey events, people and drama like this when all they have to do is go to the actual accounts and a script would write itself!
Can you recommend a title that you really liked? I have to get audiobooks now, because I can’t read very well, but...if I have to grit my teeth and read, I can do it!
Napoleon I re created the military rank of ‘Marshal’ so you can start with reading about Napoleon I Marshals of the First Empire, there were initially 18 of the and the number increased to 26 by the time it was over.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Marshals_of_the_First_French_Empire
This is a list and the site has a good bibliography which lists out lots of authors and various books on the marshals as a group and individually. The list is endless if you look at the bibliography of every book you actually DO get. Lots of this stuff you can read on line... enlarge it.
There are many other people who were not at that rank but who also wrote accounts or had accounts written about them. All of them were either close friends, relatives or rivals and the same names will appear in overlapping bio’s. You will be reading a long time.
