There were few who defended Romneys comments. Even snake-bit Republicans, chastened by the swift backlash in the media, hedged when asked to back up Romneys assessment of the challenges posed by Moscow. But MSNBCs wagons circled particularly quickly in defense of the president. Volley after volley of snark was lobbed in the GOP nominees direction.

This is Mitt Romneys severely conservative problem, University of Georgia professor Cynthia Tucker opined on-the-air. It made Romney look dumb. Hes not a dumb man, but he said something that was clearly dumb.
Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein agreed that Romneys statement was evidence of an antiquated worldview. He fretted further about how Romney, should he become president, would enter the office having severely complicated Americas bilateral relations with Moscow given his carelessly provocative statement.
I personally am worried about what it says to the Russian people, Matthews added to a chorus of sagely nods.

Appearing on Andrea Mitchell Reports in April of that year, Romney surrogate and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was confronted by the MSNBC anchor. Calling Romneys comments a throwback to the Cold War, Mitchell insisted that we work with Russia all the time. Hardly an ally but certainly not an adversary, she declared. Video below:

This outrage has zero credibility - there is nothing genuine about it - this is proven time and time again. This is the latest in a long series of fake media narratives. This is dangerous because one day someone is going to do something that is worthy of genuine outrage and concern...and no one is going to believe them because of how many times they have lied before.
If you strip away the media hysteria, literally nothing came out of this press conference. This is the level of outrage we should have seen when Obama promised to give away our nukes after he couldn’t be voted out.
I can’t believe that Utah is going to elect the Bishop to be their next Amnesty Senator.
He is helping the Starbucks CEO raise money to take on Trump in 2020.
Because the reaction to the press conference was pre-written. Short of Putin and Trump going up and doing a section out of a Shakespeare play and saying nothing else, this was how the reaction was going to be - no matter what. If Trump had literally cussed Putin out, he would be under attack for having rehearsed it with Putin behind closed doors and that it was further evidence of “collusion.”

Although - your comment just highlights the need to gain seats and not just break even this election cycle - otherwise Romney is essentially in control of the Senate and can hold everything hostage with his single vote...we need a cushion against him.
Donald Trump: Putin has eaten Obamas lunch, therefore our lunch, for a long period of time
Mar 13, 2014
Eun Kyung Kim: TODAY SHOW (NBC)
Donald Trump slammed President Obama Thursday on TODAY for failing to take a stronger line against President Vladimir Putin in dealing with Ukraine, saying he feared Obama would now make up for lost time with imprudent moves to show his manhood.
The real estate mogul and reality-TV star, who has criticized Putin for sending military troops into Crimea, said Obama must now take fierce steps to prevent the situation from escalating further.
We should definitely do sanctions and we have to show some strengths. I mean, Putin has eaten Obamas lunch, therefore our lunch, for a long period of time, Trump said. ...

Trump, in Warsaw Speech, Criticizes Russias Destabilizing Role in Ukraine, Syria
The president also reaffirmed his commitment to NATOs mutual-defense pact
Jul 6, 2017
President Trump called Russia a destabilizing influence in Europe and the Middle East, and urged it to join the community of responsible nations, in his strongest remarks yet against the regime of Vladimir Putin, whom he is scheduled to meet Friday in Hamburg for the first time.
His remarks in Warsaws Krasinski Square, which marks the 1944 Warsaw uprising against the Nazis, came after the U.S. agreed to sell Patriot missiles to Poland. The president also used the opportunity to reiterate the NATO commitment to mutual defense, a declaration he did not make during the NATO summit in May, prompting consternation among U.S. allies wary of Russias ambitions.
To those who would criticize our tough stance, I would point out that the United States has demonstratednot merely with its words but with its actionsthat we stand firmly behind Article 5, the mutual-defense commitment, Trump said Thursday. Words are easy, but actions are what matters. And for its own protection, Europe, and you know this, everybody knows this, everybody has to know this, Europe must do more.
Trump has repeatedly said NATO members must spend more on defensea position in line with past U.S. administrations. But he has been criticized because he appeared to suggest U.S. commitment to mutual defense was predicated on its allies defense spending. ...

Mike Pence on Russia:
(from the VP debate on Oct 5, 2016)
-snip-
What were dealing with is the you know, theres an old proverb that says the Russian bear never dies, it just hibernates.
And the truth of the matter is, the weak and feckless foreign policy of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama has awakened an aggression in Russia that first appeared a few years ago with their move in Georgia, now their move into Crimea, now their move into the wider Middle East.
I get what you are trying to illustrate.
I am just disgusted that he is going to be a Senator in an R jersey while working to undermine President Trump and MAGA.
Something else the Ministry of Propaganda can use him for.
The web brigades, also known as Russias troll army, Russian bots, Kremlinbots,[1] troll factory,[2][3] or troll farms are state-sponsored anonymous Internet political commentators and trolls linked to the Russian government.
Participants report that they are organized into teams and groups of commentators that participate in Russian and international political blogs and Internet forums using sockpuppets and large-scale orchestrated trolling and disinformation campaigns to promote pro-Putin and pro-Russian propaganda.[4][5][6][7]
It has also been found that articles on Russian Wikipedia concerning the MH17 crash and the 2014 Ukraine conflict were targeted by Russian internet propaganda outlets.[8][9][10]
