Newt Gingrich on Monday offered rare, scalding criticism of President Trump, demanding that the president explain the comments he made during his controversial press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the conclusion of their talks in Helsinki.
"President Trump must clarify his statements in Helsinki on our intelligence system and Putin," the former House speaker wrote on Twitter. "It is the most serious mistake of his presidency and must be corrected-immediately."
Trump received widespread scorn on Monday after he said at the media availability that he has yet to see any compelling reason why the Kremlin would have interfered in the 2016 election.
His comments follow special counsel Robert Mueller's indictment in federal court on Friday, which alleged 12 Russian military officials hacked Democratic email servers during the campaign.
Gingrich has been a vocal supporter of Trump, but he has on occasion provided constructive critiques of his performance.
Gingrich chastised Trump in April, claiming his administration had botched the release of Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein's memo outlining problems with fired FBI Director James Comey.
Baloney. The intelligence community has long been a next of treason. And now it has decided it sets policy. Last time this happened they murdered JFK.
Glad to see someone stand up to Americas Stasi, and disappointed to see repubs fellating the IC yet again.
Frankly, all I care about is winning the Senate majority so Trump can re-make the federal bench. You?
What you said .
Polls don’t matter; only results.
After the hysteria wears off a bit, this trip will be a net positive.
Gingrich is a swamp dweller?
Good to know.
Yep, Trump set the trap and the media and Left fell for it again.
Let’s hope so.
Noot is a tewl.
It has been a long time since Newt has been right about anything.
What he is is just another guy who has an opinion who knows jack squat about what went on behind closed doors between Trump and Putin.
You can't count on him. He's at times brilliant, and at other times the biggest fool around.
This trash talk will make the rounds for months if not years.
Speak for yourself. I think this whole trip has been an outrageous success for our President.
Never, ever trust this POS Newt. Total fraud. Always has been.
People who bother to vote in midterms are concerned about the contents of their wallets. Most of them don’t give a rat’s ass about foreign policy and summits.
When a person is not guilty of all charges .. it’s not a mistake to act NOT GUILTY!
The same thoughts do not go through Trump’s mind as the thoughts that run in the minds of those who think Trump is guilty of collusion and what he did not do today that they thought he should have.
All those anti Trumpers who had sorta come around, are the ones who are adding to the left’s fuel and coming down on Trump.
I don’t know what Trump could have done today to satisfy the haters out there. and I thought Trump looked tired even before he went into that meeting.. he’s had a rough few weeks.
Et tu, Newtus?
That’s a pant load too far.
This whole trip was brilliant.
Stop watching the media.
Newt has made one misstep after another.
I trust Trump to know what the hell he is doing.
