Coming off a contentious NATO summit and a trip to the U.K. in which he seemed to undercut the government of America's closest ally, President Trump took aim at another Western institution just days before his high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In an interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor in Scotland on Saturday, President Trump named the European Union -- comprising some of America's oldest allies -- when asked to identify his "biggest foe globally right now."
"Well, I think we have a lot of foes. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe. Russia is foe in certain respects. China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe. But that doesn't mean they are bad. It doesn't mean anything. It means that they are competitive," Mr. Trump said at his golf club in Turnberry, Scotland. Trump on Putin meeting: "I go in with low expectations"
"I respect the leaders of those countries. But, in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in NATO and they weren't paying their bills," he added.

Trump is not saying the EU is a military enemy. His statement was in the context of trade. As usual the media gets wrapped across the axle in taking words out of context.
Trumps favorite sport is triggering leftists. And he has so much fun doing it. I love he’s not PC. God bless Trump, God bless America, winning MAGA!
We repeatedly talk and read about how unfair past trade deals have been to the U.S. from every country we deal with. However, in each and every case, some U.S. official approved and agreed to that deal. Has ANYONE, EVER inquired as to what sort of mega$$$$ kick-backs found their way into the coffers of those thieving dealmakers? Under the table, of course!
Think of Groucho and Margaret Dumont, and you have Trump’s relationship to libtards. He pushes their buttons and they fall for it every time.
Yes it is, and he got one right on this thread.
EU certainly is/was an attempt toward a world government.
An enemy is an enemy.
Example: My pastor next door is a foe.....
.......when he is out of food and starts cannibalizing people.
Out of context. For the Ignorati.
Context, Context, Context - foe, as in “competitior”, as in not “bad”, merely competitors.
But is the media, ever, concerned about context? No. Any word is eligible to be taken out of context, when it suits the media’s political agendas.
The EU thinks it can do what the Soviet Union failed to do in collectivism.
I'm hoping that the President pulls our troops out of Germany, brings them back to the U.S., disbands the units and downsizes the Army. The savings that generates would more than fund the wall that the President has been talking about.
All countries are not the same. His comments were in the context of trade
But you can take it up with Trump. He calls the EU foes yet maintains military troops there. Ask him.
If the EU is a foe then why are we spending billions of dollars each year keeping troops there to help defend them?
*************
Good point. Europe is pursuing their own interests, but not sure the word “foe” is applicable or constructive. Poor choice of words IMO.
Trump is right. The EU was created for one reason, counter the US Dollar. “Foe” in the Presidents regard is a competitor.
“WHAT THEY DO TO US IN TRADE”
Gee, Headline Writer, don’t you think the whole quote needs to be put in context?
Geez . . .
