Juan Carlos Nazario was sitting on a lakeside bench waiting to play soccer when he heard the staccato popping of gunshots outside Louies On the Lake, a popular waterfront grill and pub. He ran to his car to get his gun and moved toward the sounds.
Bryan Whittle was driving with his wife, heading off for a Memorial Day weekend getaway, when he saw a commotion outside Louies. He thought someone might be drowning, so instead of turning his truck onto the highway, he barreled into the parking lot to offer help. As he jumped out, what he learned stunned him: There was an active shooter just yards away, and wounded victims were holed up in the restaurants bathroom.
Whittle, too, grabbed his gun.
In a matter of seconds, the two armed citizens became self-appointed protectors, moving to take up positions around the shooter, drawing their weapons and shouting for him to drop his. Time stretched and warped. There was an exchange of gunfire. The gunman was hit several times and fell. As Nazario and Whittle converged over the man to restrain him, police arrived. Unsure who was who, officers handcuffed all of the men and put them on the ground as the shooter bled out into the grass and died.

Lots of locals that were hunters brought out their deer rifles, make the shooter keep his head down. Local PD officer climbed the tower, ultimat ly killing the shooter. Lost some friends that day.
Gotta love the ridiculously biased write up.
“The NRA has brandished the good guy with a gun argument after several recent mass shootings. Wayne LaPierre, the groups chief executive, invoked the phrase after the 2012 massacre of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school. He repeated it after the rampage in which 17 people were killed at a high school in Parkland, Fla., in February, even though an armed school resource officer was present and did not enter the school or engage the gunman during that attack.”
Ummmm how exactly does the fact that the Broward Coward refused to engage the shooter IN ANY WAY invalidate the truism that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun? Wayne LaPierre did not say having another gun present automatically neutralizes a bad guy with a gun. He said that’s the only way they can be stopped. The good guy with a gun sort of has to actually DO SOMETHING to stop the shooter - not cower behind a car out in the parking lot like the Broward Cops.

“We dont want people to be vigilantes, Bo Mathews, a spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department, said in a recent interview. Thats why we have police officers.”
Arrogant a$$hole! You weren’t there to stop the shooting.
I love a good story with a happy ending.
Yea..right..feels good to be able to protect your own family with a firearm huh Bo?
Some of these igmos are unable or unwilling to think things through. What if you were sitting at Louie's on the lake with your family, unarmed and some jackass comes in and starts shooting the place up?
Quick, grab your phone, dial 911, have your family quickly slide under the plastic table, explain the dispatch the situation and ask for a squad car, oh and by the way, could you dispatch a couple of ambulances as well.
Then..wait..1001, 1002, 1003, 1004.....
Stupid cops. Is that powdered sugar on your collar?
Dont call me a vigilante just because Im ready, willing and able to shoot back when I stumble upon a transexually demon possessed idiot with a gun shooting up the place!
I read it as an attempt to cast doubt on the utility of an armed public.
Civics 101 is a lost thing apparently.
The US Constitution formed a representative republic, wherein the power to legislate comes directly and only from the people via elected officers; each state admitted to the union is required to have “republican” form of state government too, and every state constitution requires all subordinate political groups to be formed of the same manner- the people choosing people to write and enforce laws and be accountable to them.
Hence, the people are the “posse comitatus” or the power of the land”, the government is simply and solely the arm of that will.
It is well within the purview of the “people” or in some cases, a “person” to uphold the law and will of the people as in this example.
Perhaps LEOs and all other government entities/employees need to be exposed to this simple but profound principle.
Now, to the event at hand, notice how the LEOs make the assumption that everyone with a firearm is a potential bad guy, and perhaps from their perspective, justifiably so.
So, what to do if and when you are the good guy on the scene and it is culminating with the arrival of the police? Well, be certain to quickly ID yourself as a good guy. Put your firearm away as soon as you can. Re-holster or place it on the ground and step on it or something to assure the police or any other armed persons that you are not the threat. Don’t wait for conflicting instructions- place your hands in a very non-threatening posture-like on top of your heard or in the common “surrender with my hands up” position, concisely ID yourself as a good guy and then make eye contact with one officer and talk directly to him, yeah, him. Ask him what he wants you to do and do it. Tell the officer(s) concisely what you need to tell him and then shut up. The witnesses and forensic/physical evidence will tell the whole story eventually.
Yeah, lawyer up soonest, they do and for good reason.
Good thing there were 2 more shooters. Liberals like the Oklahoma governor don’t want people to be able to protect themselves. They prefer dead people.
As the shooter Blood Out on the grass and died! I love a happy ending!
Long before any situation develops go to USCCA.COM and buy a membership.
WaPo doesnt want to admit the truth. We are all protectors. It is an important part of a civilized society.
“as the shooter bled out into the grass and died.”
I love...sniff.. happy endings.
Good Info...
Thanks
Pretty good advice, thanks.
LEO first priority is to control the situation not figure out what happened.
Although, I disagree with telling them you are a good guy. Just follow your advice to be nonthreatening and make eye contact and follow their directions. They will get around to asking what happened.
Nope, Houston McCoy was an Austin Police officer..
You are correct. That was my memory of a report I’d read as well. I hope these are facts below:
“Martinez recalled: “He says, ‘Are we playing for keeps?’ I said, ‘Damn right we are.’ And he said, ‘You better deputize me then.’
“And that’s when I found out he was a civilian. And I said, ‘Well, consider yourself deputized.’” “
Allen Crum was a civilian. His family was killed by Whitman within the Tower. He and Officer Ramiro “Ray” Martinez were that day’s “self-appointed protectors”.
Truly.

The 2 heroes are on the left.
