Trump at NATO summit: 'Germany is totally controlled by Russia'

“Germany is totally controlled by Russia … They will be getting between 60 and 70 percent of their energy from Russia and a new pipeline, and you tell me if that is appropriate because I think its not,” Trump said.

The U.S. president was speaking at a press conference in front of NATO representatives ahead of a two-day summit.

The Trump administration’s policies indicate it views security and trade as intimately linked. And when it comes to the trade balance, no ally will be spared.

Speaking in Brussels, Belgium on the first leg of his European trip, the U.S. president said a flurry of oil and gas deals had given Moscow far too much influence over the continent’s largest economy.

In particular, he singled out the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project as being especially "inappropriate."

“I think it is a very bad thing for NATO and I don’t think it should have happened and I think we have to talk to Germany about it. On top of that, Germany is just paying a little bit over 1 percent (on defense) … And I think that is inappropriate also,” he added. 'An attack on Germany and Russia'

Trump has long criticized Berlin and other NATO allies for “freeriding” on Washington’s defense capabilities. Currently only five of NATO’s 29 member states actually allocate the 2 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) to military spending that they are formally committed to as part of the alliance. Those five are the U.S., the U.K., Greece, Estonia and Poland.

There was once the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth!

Indeed. Darn shame it couldn't last.

Historically Russia rationally and now irrationally have always viewed outsiders as a potential threat. “Germans/Latins” from the west, Chinese (other easterners Mongols, Japanese, etc.) from the east. It makes little sense now (except perhaps the Chinese & Moslems!) but its in their psyche. They have always had an inferiority complex toward the West & a abject fear of the East. During the communist days it was useful to magnify it to keep their people in line. Now it makes little sense but its there.

Pure Russian propaganda and a convoluted rationale for Soviet and now Russian imperialism. The Soviets/Russians have been an expansionist power for hundreds of years. Whether it was Catherine the Great or Stalin, Russia has always eyed expansion of its (evil) empire.

I lived two years in Warsaw during the days of Solidarnosc' and martial law. The Soviets were hated in Poland as oppressors along with its puppet governments. I also served as a naval officer in a NATO command during the late 1960s. NATO is/was always a defensive alliance. There were no plans to invade Russia.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the Baltic and former Warsaw Pact countries begged to join NATO because they feared that Russia would eventually try to reclaim their countries. Article 5 was their insurance policy that the US would stop any attempt to invade their territory by the Russians. Ukraine was trying to apply to enter NATO in the late 1990s. I am sure they wished that they had joined given the annexation of Crimea.

By dividing NATO into an Atlantic alliance in which we are a member and a Central European-Baltic in which we are not - maybe with “interested observer” status. The “Western Threat (the USA, etc.)” is more diffuse. Its now indirect and can be argued by us & “the Atlantic Alliance” the Central-Baltic Alliance “ is not our front yard! We’re cordial neighbors!”. Anyway it won’t happen The Central Alliance will have to be nuclear capable in order to be credible.

Pure nonsense. Any "Central Alliance" is a pipe dream. These countries want to be part of NATO and enjoy the protections it offers, especially Article 5 and that obligates the US and the rest of NATO to come to their defense if attacked.

". . . including Russia low balling the costs to make the deal . . .

So they make less profit or sell at cost, Germany still gets cheaper gas and oil and drives market prices lower so everyone else benefits from lower prices as well.

As for Ukraine, let Nuland take care of Ukraine out of her share of the Hillary/Obama billions they stole. When they can't siphon off gas to make a buck and claim it's Russia short changing Europe the country will finally shatter into the three or four pieces it's been destined to break apart into ever since it became independent.

They didn't establish a Federal system but instead vested all power in Kiev so, now they reap what they sowed.

Ya' know, it's a funny damn thing that the Free Traitors are all for trade with China, which is still absolutely Communist, and all of East Asia because, "trade will open them up and gradually make them more democratic and Westernized", but they damn sure don't apply that same rule to Russia. Well, unless they have a crowd of Harvard thieves and their hand picked Russian criminal oligarchs under their thumb to pick the choice bits for themselves. Odd that China doesn't let them rape China and that's all good but when Russia stopped the thieves they became "evil" all of a sudden.

Talk about no level playing field. In real terms, China spends more on their military than Russia does but, meh, no biggie, just keep shipping jobs to China and sanctioning Russia because that's how, "free trade makes countries more democratic" works.

The US has thirty years of stupid crap to recover from and Trump seems to be the only one that sees the whole damn web of lies for the contradictory mess that it really is.

JMHo, and everyone has one

“They didn’t see this one coming.”

People forget that Obama, Clapper and Brennan no longer control our Nation Intel. President Trump does.

He would not make a statement like, “ ‘Germany is totally controlled by Russia!”, unless he has documentation.

Which, he now has!

Well perhaps its time for Russia to grow up - other than Germany who invaded everybody they could, what western power has ever invaded Russia. Napoleon in 1812 but goodness that was two centuries ago. Russia is and has run been by paranoid tyrants Putin is just the latest tsar. The only country that desires Russian land is China. The Russians are like Muslims, nobody wants them in their neighborhood.

Important side note.....

Benjamin Netanyahu to meet with Putin tomorrow ‘in Moscow’ ahead of Putin Trump meeting...Just recall Netanyahu was sitting at the parade with Putin awhile back for a defined political visual when the huge protests were happening on the Border Iranian supported... thus assuring that Putin would not be intervening. It was said the deal for that visual was BeBe would assist Putin in reestablishing relations with the US/Trump........so it’s interesting that he’s meeting with Putin ahead of Trumps meeting.

Oh my god I just watched the video at that link - president Trump is beyond incredible. Its staggering how good of leader he is. Not backing down to BS arguments and repeatedly hammering home the point. Germany is totally controlled by Russia - kaboom!

Absolutely, especially when what's under the roads isn't designed to handle the weight. That's why there should be a route designed or modified to handle them. Probably in every large US city just like there are evacuation routes.
