Just one day before President Trump is set to announce his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy in a primetime address from the White House, a top Democratic senator suggested that stopping the nominee is more important than the upcoming midterm elections.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., acknowledged that so-called red-state Democrats may be tempted to vote for Trump's selection out of political necessity, but urged his colleagues Sunday to consider more than their political careers.
"Beyond the procedure, beyond the gamesmanship, it is a life-and-death important decision to be made by this court on so many issues," the Senate minority whip said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
"The men and women that I work with on the Democratic side really take this seriously," he added, after host Chuck Todd raised the possibility that Democrats could lose their bid to retake the Senate by opposing the nominee. "They understand it's an historic decision. It's about more than the next election. It's about what future the United States of America is going to chart."

So glad Durbin is one of the louder voices in the Dem party these days. He drives away voters in droves with every appearance. We’ve seen the Dems use this playbook pick after pick. Burn the house down Dick!
He’s the poster boy for a party that has lost it’s bearings.
Sorry, Heidi. Your party considers you expendable.
It was never the intent of the Founders/Framers that how American citizens live their lives (or would be allowed to live at all from the beginning) should be decided by courts.
Dick Durbin is really not-too-bright. The “Red State” Democrat Senators are not the only Democrat Senators facing defeat in their elections. Senators like, Tim Kaine, Bill Nelson, Debbie Stabenow, etc., are in danger of losing their seats, also.
If the Trump Nominee for the Supreme court is defeated, I predict the Democrats will lose ten to twelve Senate seats, come the November election.
The way democrats are escalating obstruction, I dont know how the next democrat president, who has a Republican lead senate to ever get a cabinet nominee through or any court nominee to a vote.
If Rat senators are really that suicidal I say Great. Well have a fine time confirming the replacement for walking dead woman Buzzi later on.
Resist prosperity.
IF this is Demoncrats version of “strategery”, we have nothing to worry about.
we know what they'll say so the money shot is always the best part...
I’m thinking there’s a lobbyist with a case on the docket. If it’s heard October-December, the new justice won’t vote on the case.
That’s the only way Durbin’s strategy makes sense.
“Ah, vote him down, get voted out of your seat and your R replacement votes him in after getting seated in January.
Works for me.”
The RATs are in the “heads they win, tails we loose” syndrome here. It’s going to be interesting, as we find out just who’s who in the zoo known as the US Senate.
“Hes willing to sacrifice other peoples political careers.”
He’s telling Heitkamp, Manchin and Donolly they need to be the one’s to jump on the grenade!
Translation: “My seat is safe, how ‘bout some of the rest of you peons fall on your swords for me...”
