Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) warned Republicans against continuing their "assault" against Robert Mueller, writing in an op-ed Friday that the GOP must let Mueller continue his investigation.
In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, the former Tennessee Republican urged Republicans to fight for the "rule of law," even if it meant going up against the Trump administration.
"I am also a Republican because I believe in the rule of law. Republicans must fight for that principle today even if it means pushing back against a Republican administration," Frist wrote.
"It isnt easy to tell a president of your own party that he is wrong. But the assault on Muellers investigation does not help the president or his party," he added. "[But] the president must remember that only Muellers exoneration can lift the cloud hanging over the White House."
Frist went on to argue that claims of "runaway legal authority," such as those made by former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort in an attempt to have the charges against him dismissed, do not hold up when compared to Mueller's record.
"I have worried over the years about runaway legal authority, and Ive battled against activist judges. I dont worry about Robert Mueller," he said.
"And his investigation is getting results: By any objective standard, he has moved swiftly, obtaining 23 indictments and five guilty pleas in just more than a year."
Trump has frequently characterized Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," and has accused the special counsel of going beyond the original scope of the investigation to pursue charges not related to alleged Russian election interference.
Republicans have frequently pointed to text messages sent by former members of Mueller's probe as evidence of pervasive anti-Trump bias that they say tainted the investigation from the start.
Support Free Republic, Folks!
where did the R party ever get all these Ahoolians, anyway?
this guy, McShame, Flake, Kasick, Collins, Schwarzenegger, you name it there are several more leftists in GOP drag
time to Drain the Swamp in the GOP, not just in the government (where most of the needed swamp-draining is over a year late on delivery already!)
That is the sad truth...such a great state. Love TN. Nashville is booming.
I’m concerned about the Senate seat down there this November. Hope Trump goes there, a lot.
Another treasonous Rino speaks. Any fool can see its an illegal witch hunt.
F him.
Exactly, well said!
Mueller sure had caused a lot of RINO’s to expose themselves. That alone is a good thing. One the witch hunt is over, they anti-Trumpers better watch out. I’m thinking/hoping there will be a massive payback, Trump-style.
Though an honorable man, Frist was always a limp-wristed RINO. He shoulda stuck to medicine.
McConnell and Frist. You people in KY and TN paying attention to these clowns?
What does the damn law mean to an ordinary person when the rich and political flout it a will. As a retired police officer I call it the Criminal Just-Us System.
Not blind - part of the “team”.

Mueller isn’t running an investigation, he’s running a ‘Judicial Coup’..
Hey Frist, where is the evidence of Russia Collusion?
I’m ashamed he represented the State of Tennessee.
Seems like all we ever elect are RINOs like Frist.
As a policeman, I’m sure you have seen things. My family are by & large lawyers, so I’ve heard a lot of stories that would make your toes curl.
The rich & powerful have always had the upper hand. Less so here in the States, but human nature is the same everywhere.
Has former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott chimed in yet?
I thought Frist was pretty much a good guy when he was in the senate. You just can’t trust any of these bastards anymore.
Bill Frist, I thought he died of limp ***k syndrome? He’s still alive?
You better hurry and propose to Mulehead if you love him so much, Bill. Before Joe Walsh beats you to it.
RINO’s, like Frist, leave the Senate and the House move the rest of the way left to enjoy the patronage of RAT’s who make them feel and look like they still have substance - especially as long their ‘wussie words’ support the RAT’s playbook.
If he has I haven’t seen it.
