The Anti-Trump Right Has Become Trump’s Base
New York Magazine ^ | July 3, 2018 | Jonathan Chait

Last fall, the Pew Research Center released one of its periodic typologies of the American electorate, identifying the demographic and ideological fissures both within and between the two parties. The two most conservative factions within the Republican Party were familiar types. The first, and largest, “Core Conservatives,” holds doctrinaire positions on everything. This group is “financially comfortable,” and “overwhelmingly supports smaller government, lower corporate tax rates and believes in the fairness of the nation’s economic system,” and also “express[es] a positive view of U.S. involvement in the global economy.” This is the conservatism of Paul Ryan.

Another group, “Country First Conservatives,” is “older and less educated than other Republican-leaning typology groups,” and has more populist and isolationist views. They are “highly critical of immigrants and deeply wary of U.S. global involvement,” and most likely to believe “if America is too open to people from all over the world, we risk losing our identity as a nation.”

Which of these two groups do you think registered higher support for Donald Trump? The Country First Conservatives, right? Well, no. Ninety-three percent of Core Conservatives approved of Trump’s job performance, as opposed to 84 percent of Country First Conservatives. The most ideologically pure conservatives are Trumpier than the nativist and isolationist ones.

The waning months of the Republican primary campaign in 2016 devolved into a contest between Trump and the purity of conservative doctrine. Ted Cruz, the last candidate standing against Trump, represented the latter, and enjoyed the vocal support of most of the organized conservative movement. Cruz called Trump a “fake conservative.” Rick Perry had termed him a “a cancer on conservatism.” Trump’s presidency has driven home the surprising reality that Trump is conservatism....

If you had done a background study on Trump you would have learned he has an unparalleled work ethic, a never-give-up determination, and a sincere all-in devotion to Christ.

And Melania is a big part of his Christian devotion.

As many in this forum described in the past, Trump is Cyrus.

You seem so excited. I hope you are right, but these #walkaway converts will swell the ranks of RINO supporters. They will walk right into the loving arms of McConnel and Ryan! Every one of them is ready to take the place of John McCain. Why am I wrong?

My top five secrets of Life.

1. Follow the principles enshrined in the United States Constitution, the Foundation of our Republic.

2. Understand that nobody owes you a living.

3. Understand that Life isn’t fair.

4. Help People who can’t help themselves, not people who won’t help themselves.

5. NEVER, EVER VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT.

Lol.

Reason for...really?

In the eighties The Chicago Tribune founded its own in-house polling division. I guess outside polls kept coming up with the wrong results.

Eventually this division was spun off as a separate entity. Some time after that “Tribune Research “ changed its name to “Pew Research “ either to honor an early employee or because they stink.

Regardless of why, the organization still struggles with all its might to deliver whatever conclusions it is hired to produce.

In the early days of the internet Pew proudly posted the story of its founding and history (somewhat more glowingly than I have) but they dropped the mid two-thousands.

Here is Jonathan Chait in all his brilliance. You just can't beat this for insight: “Core Conservatives,” holds doctrinaire positions on everything. This group is “financially comfortable,” and “overwhelmingly supports smaller government, lower corporate tax rates and believes in the fairness of the nation’s economic system,” and also “express[es] a positive view of U.S. involvement in the global economy.” This is the conservatism of Paul Ryan.

Utter unadulterated moon-barking mad self-delusion. Paul Ryan is a deep state globalist crony capital welfare queen. There only thing conservative about him at all is that he plays a "conservative" stooge on TV.

Core Conservatives" ... as opposed to "Country First Conservatives"

Like I said, our friend Jonathon here is moon-barking-mad to think he can drive this freight train through THAT difference which is no difference at all or at least not enough of a difference that one need spend political blood and capital on it.

The most ideologically pure conservatives are Trumpier than the nativist and isolationist ones.

There's a simple reason for this:

Most of these "ideologically pure conservatives" who opposed Trump early in 2016 were almost certainly leery of him because of his well-documented track record as a New York City liberal on many issues.

I suspect Trump won almost every one of these former opponents very quickly -- once he had an opportunity to show them he was far more conservative than most of the jack@sses masquerading as the "conservative leadership" on the U.S. political scene.

"realize they are to stupid understand"

It's always cute when as someone insults someone else for some flaw the insulter expresses the flaw themselves.

I once had a Russian girlfriend who, criticizing her Russian friends' English, called them 'illiteral.'

I've done it too so I'm not being particularly harsh, but one should be careful when hurling insults such as 'stupid,' lest one supply evidence that one is exactly that.

They haven’t become Trump’s base. They’ve only semi-joined Trump’s base.

I don’t know, maybe you are right, but you should read some of their stories. They are SUPPORTING Trump, standing with him. Either way, it’s better than them on their knees worshiping Hillary. I created a Facebook account just to talk to them and they seem legit to me. I really think though that Democrats are going to be utterly obliterated in the midterms, it’s going to be shocking as hell. Like you said though it would probably be wise to inform them of the RINOs, that there is really no difference between Maxine Waters and John McCain or Pelosi and Ryan. I don’t think they realize that.

“If he was to push this aspect of the border who could stand in his way?”

Both parties in Congress, the MSM, and the Deep State.

But aside from those, he should have a pretty easy time of it.

Interesting.

Ted Cruz voters and Trump voters have essentially indistinct [sic] beliefs:

I don’t listen to the cheer leaders I do pay attentions to how the player preforms on the field. I reserve no demand I be allowed to make my own judgement as to someones fitness I don’t put my trust in anyone until I am sure of their fitness, I believe my doubts were justified and I have already admitted that he has proven himself.

But now in many ways he needs to move especially on the border and I see lots of words but little action. He shrugs off opposition on so many issue but on the border his action have not as yet matched his words.

The court has already ruled that the nation’s security is the duty, responsibility and privy of the President. Enough with the town halls promising a wall! I say build the damn thing and be done with it!

The Supreme Court just recently ruled the the secure to the US is responsibility and duty of the President. And besides when has he done anything since taking office that Both parties in Congress, the MSM, and the Deep State have opposed him? As far as the deep state he has more than enough evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors committed by so many its high time as the Chief Executive officer in charge of Law Enforcement he didn’t have many of this enemies of the state picked up. Once some of them start going to jail it would like turning on a light in a room fukll of cock roaches.
