Hawaii becomes 1st state to ban sunscreens deemed harmful to coral reefs

Hawaii just became the first state to ban certain sunscreens as a measure to protect the state's essential coral reefs.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige signed a bill on Tuesday, July 3, banning the sale of sunscreens containing two chemicals, oxybenzone and octinoxate, believed to harm coral reefs and other marine ecosystems.

State lawmakers passed the legislation in early May. Senate Bill 2571 prohibits the sale and distribution of non-prescribed sunscreens on the islands that contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, which can be deadly for coral larvae.

The ban will not be applied to medically prescribed sunscreens or makeup that contain oxybenzone or octinoxate.

TG there are no coral reefs off the coast of CA, but I just imagine our “legislature” will want to get on this bandwagon too.

Protecting the coral reefs is critical to Hawaii’s tourist industry. It also protects a key part of their fishery.

Looking at it that way the decision makes perfect sense.

Will they search tourists’ luggage? If not, I see a business opportunity at departure ports to Hawaii.

Since 80% of sunscreen being used was likely brought in by tourists from elsewhere this will be an EPIC FAIL.

With a doctor’s prescription it is OK to kill coral reefs—clever! ;-)

I’m confident the science behind this is just as sound as the science that got that dangerous chemical DDT banned.

The best sunscreen is a flannel shirt.

Are you confident about the science behind sunscreens?

...believed to harm coral reefs...

I could be wrong but I think the word 'believed' is not the same as the word 'proved.'

That was my first thought too. I don't s%#t about sunscreen. But I do know that DDT saved a lot of lives at one point. Then, someone convinced some ignoramus that DDT was bad for some South American jungle fish and the world elected to let the peasants die. So compassionate.

BTW - guess who was impacted the most... the poor, the elderly and the children.

Progressive stupidity of the first degree. Hawaii has the highest skin cancer rates in the U.S. (well, duhhh). And now the legislature bans sunscreen over the warnings of doctors, who also point out that the majority of research does not support the latest hysteria.

Being one of those who has to wear sunscreen every day even though I never go to the beach, I would hazard to guess that more people in Hawaii wear sunscreen who don’t go in the ocean than people who do.

But never let facts or reality get in the way of pretending to do good.

I’m not too worried, I suspect there will be a huge bootleg sunscreen industry that will develop, plus there’s Amazon

Ohh, by the way, I should have mentioned that a large percentage of women’s cosmetics also contain these same ingredients (and are sold as protecting your skin from aging from UV rays), so a side effect will be these are banned also. I can hear the screams already when that sinks in.

Yes, there is more evidence daily in Hawaii that volcanoes are harmful!
