...FBI agents later interviewed Marrero's ex-girlfriend, who confirmed that she was 17 at the time the pictures were taken. A conviction will force Marrero to register as a sex offender and could land him in prison for up to 30 years. According to the U.S. Department of Justice's guide to federal child pornography law, "a first time offender convicted of producing child pornography...face fines and a statutory minimum of 15 years to 30 years maximum in prison." Under Ohio law, which also sets the cutoff for child pornography at 18, Marrero would have faced between six months and eight years. ...

Change the laws ? We still dont even know who writes them. Lobbyist apparently.
“I never trust Reason.com to tell the whole truth.”
BINGO!
No it is not.
Don’t show naked pictures of your underage girlfriend to a child pornographer, and don’t talk about doing that at the child pornographer’s trial.
I know that this all seems very unfair to people who like child pornography, but too damned bad.
See my 59.
I suspect that Marrero has been viewing his roommate’s collection.
Who has the resources to prosecute against the spirit of the law?
See my 47.
A seventeen year old isn’t mature enough to evaluate the potential lifetime consequences of having naked pictures of themselves while they were young distributed.
Hence the law.
A seventeen year old is not a child, but they are a minor.
“And what would you say if your daughters naked photo was given to a convicted pedophile and possibly distributed all over the world?”
I’m doing my best to raise my daughters in such a way that they make better choices than to let someone take a compromising picture of them that will follow them all the rest of their lives.
I agree. Witness intimidation seems to be a thing with the FBI.
Stories like this make me thankful that:
1) There weren’t laws like this back in the 80’s.
2) I didn’t start dating until I was 19.
3) All of my dates were my age or slightly older.
Complete subversion of the DoJ and theyre wasting time on this.
I need to move to a mountain and be a hermit. I always thought people like that were weird, but they dont seem as weird anymore.
You to have ALL of the information to make a decision, but this sounds like one of those cases where if I was on the jury I would be keeping the nullification option open.
This is what the insane sex laws have brought about.
I have seen several cases very similar to this.
Many states modified there sex laws to prevent this from happening if the ages between the people were less than three years difference.
I would hope that if you were on the jury you wouldn’t base your decision on reason.com click-bait ...
F*uck the FBI and draconian overreaching laws.
.
Makes no sense at all.
Jail the prosecutors and judges first!
.
“You to have ALL of the information to make a decision, “
AMEN. Too bad you don’t follow your own advice.
