Two doctors volunteer to STAY with children trapped in Thai cave for FOUR MONTHS (trunc)

Two doctors have volunteered to stay with children trapped in a Thai cave for four months if floodwaters cut them off and make rescue attempts impossible, it has emerged.

A football coach and 12 'rake thin' young players remain trapped in the Thamg Luang cave network in the country's north as experts desperately try to come up with a plan to rescue them.

There are fears fresh rainfall over the next few days could add to flooding in the caves - meaning the boys, who cannot swim, may have to wait until the end of monsoon season in October before they can be brought to safety.

If that does happen, two of Thailand's Navy doctors have already volunteered to stay in the underground chamber for as long as it takes in what is being described as a 'huge sacrifice'.

British volunteer divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton were among those who struggled through narrow passages and murky waters to search for the boys, who were found starving but unhurt on an elevated rock on Monday.

A first meal of rice and pork - packaged up in sealed portions - is being prepared for the youngsters, who have already been given energy gels and paracetamol. Seal commander Rear Adm Arpakorn Yookongkaew said a team of seven, including medics, are with the boys and looking after them after an underground headquarters was set up - stocked with diving equipment, food and medical supplies.

You could teach them all to swim in a cave pool, and get them out.

That’s not the problem. WHERE to drill and how to set up a drilling rig on a mountainside is the problem.

Cave diving should be left to experts. The best they can hope for is to train the kids for full head scuba gear and take them out one at a time as if they were a package.

He told the Sunday Times magazine in 2013: 'Panic and adrenaline are great in certain situations but not in cave-diving. What you want is nice and boring. 'If something goes wrong 10 kilometres down an underwater tunnel, you usually have until your air runs out to find a solution or make your peace.'

The two Englishmen that made the first contact, are among the very best.
They said it was "gnarly".

If this was your child, what would you choose?

The drilling is the easy part. Knowing where to drill is just about impossible.

At least with the miners in Chile they knew exactly where they could drill. Not so with the Thai kids. GPS doesn’t work underground.

I used to work with a lady who did cave diving as a hobby. It’s incredibly dangerous; several of her friends died doing it.

I have been diving since 1994 and will NOT get near a cave. Too damn Dangerous!!

How far back are they?

Passages are very narrow and visibility is nil. I thought of that, and then I remembered what my former coworker talked about ... and thought it was probably a very bad idea.

In fact, maybe the reason the 2 rescuers are staying with the kids is they don't want to try to swim out of there.

I have been diving since 1994 (Rescue diver). Check out the article in post 31. Trying to bring the kids out on SCUBA “nails” it!

The cave passage is flooded, in some places 16 feet. There is not enough opening for a diver with an air tank. And the boys do not know how to swim.. They are 4 miles into the cave.

TTE (Through the earth) communications and cave radios If they could get one of these to where the kids are and send a signal, they might be able to get a fix on exactly where they need to drill.

Just take a full day and teach those kids scuba right there where they are

Would that be your choice if it was your son?

Another article mentioned they were making accurate maps of the cave system.
Included a photo of a yellow box about the size of a footlocker full of sensors and recorders.
But they have to drag it through the tunnels.
Not an easy task.

Either way, if they didn’t know how to swim, they could be attached to divers and be out in MUCH less time than 4 months.

This story doesn’t pass the smell test. Not to mention the smell, disease and contamination is going to be horrendous in 4 months. They’re healthy today so bring them out before they get sick and it’s impossible.
