The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) spent a total of $4 billion on improper food stamp payments to those receiving benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the USDA confirmed with Breitbart News on Friday. The USDAs Food and Nutrition Service announced this week that improper payments made up 6.3 percent of SNAP money in the fiscal year (FY) 2017the latest data available from the agency.
Breitbart News analyzed the USDAs data on food stamp spending and found that $4,007,026,532 of the $63,603,595,754 the agency spent on SNAP in FY 2017 went to improper payments.
The USDA told Breitbart News that it is important to note that improper payments include both overpayments and underpayments, meaning that households on SNAP that received less than what they were supposed to receive for the month are also included in the percentage rate.
Brandon Lipps, the Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services at the agency, said that most improper payments are due to human errorseither because of state agencies miscalculating benefits or benefit recipients giving state agencies the wrong information.
The USDA said that state agencies cause about 60 percent of these errors while the remaining 40 percent is due to benefit recipients not providing the proper information about their income, place of residence, and other necessary details the agency needs to provide them the right amount in benefits.
The national percentage rate is an average of state agencies accuracy in paying the correct amount in SNAP benefits to food stamp recipients and does not always reflect fraud from food stamp users, according to the USDA.

Rice, beans, cheese, milk powder. Road kill is available free if they want meat.
One encouraging thing I observed at the end of my Garden Center Career was that more and more people WERE using benefits cards to purchase garden seeds and plants to grow some of their own food.
Our state also allows you to use EBT cards at local Farmer’s Markets.
A tiny drop in the bucket, but something else that could be looked into and expanded.
I dunno. It just annoys me to no end that people aren’t taught basic home keeping/money skills.
But the kids know there are a dozen different ways to ‘identify’ themselves and four-year-olds are being taught about s-e-x!

“No cash and an approved list of basic foods.”
Perfect!
These liberal handouts are being used as an urban criminal bartering business. Bodega’s in urban areas are the go to points
And don’t forget despite EBT, you’ve got the socialist schools thinking they have to feed everybody, so we’re basically paying twice (property and income taxes), and making it more likely they can either waste food or be eating surf and turf while we’re eating beans.
Why in the world should we be giving a family EBT, then 2 meals at school, then a weekend backpack of probably horrible processed food? Are there children starving in the streets? Not here.
Farm Bump!
Why not rail about the Congress who are the purveyors of nearly all that you hate?
“A billion here, a billion there...”
My son was a cashier at Kroger and he never saw that. He did see them buying snacks that could be easily sold like a 12 pack of potato chips.
We have West Virginia gypsies that comb the neighborhood selling meat that was probably bought thru SNAP.
Some must know how to cook, based on the number of carts full of little more than meat I’ve seen...pork chops, bacon, ribs, steak...
And....we were expecting anything less from an entity that is so huge that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing?
And that doesnt count the billions used for soda pop, etc.
Knowing how to cook should be a basic instinct for everyone.
When frozen pizzas, crab legs, shrimp and microwave meals are removed from food stamps the societal uproar will make 1960’s Detroit riots look like a Dale Carnegie meet and greet.
You could “teach” them till the cows come home....doesn’t mean they will actually take the time and effort to plan, shop, cook, cleanup...THAT’S TOO MUCH WORK!
I don’t believe the “teaching” will help much...many are LAZY, and won’t do the work...it’s why they are in the situation they are in. I think we should give out rice, beans, milk/cheese, lettuce, canned veggies....give them a few recipes...and let them learn on their own. But, if we continue handing out MONEY, ie “stamps” or whatever, they will definitely NEVER learn.
I read a list of things that Millennials are demanding from employers, companies/stores, on-line, manufacturers, etc. and ALL of them involve pretty much enabling them to sit at home, not go out, and just live life on line and work from their apartments.
They don’t WANT the responsibility of owning a home, they don’t want to have to go out to bars to drink, they don’t want to go to higher-end restaurants because they have to get dressed (LOL!) they don’t want to grocery shop, though they like those meals in delivered boxes you cook at home.
I guess the Left IS getting their dream of keeping us all in little cages, fat and happy and obedient! *SPIT*
Any bets the REAL number is actually exponentially higher than the $4B being reported? I wouldn't be surprised if it's 10x that or even higher given how our Government wastes money.
Most improper payments are due to human errors but I did get a new house and car of late...............
How much wall could that have built?
