$4 Billion in SNAP Money Went to Improper Food Stamp Payments
breitbart ^ | KATHERINE RODRIGUEZ

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) spent a total of $4 billion on improper food stamp payments to those receiving benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the USDA confirmed with Breitbart News on Friday. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service announced this week that improper payments made up 6.3 percent of SNAP money in the fiscal year (FY) 2017—the latest data available from the agency.

Breitbart News analyzed the USDA’s data on food stamp spending and found that $4,007,026,532 of the $63,603,595,754 the agency spent on SNAP in FY 2017 went to improper payments.

The USDA told Breitbart News that “it is important to note that improper payments include both overpayments and underpayments,” meaning that households on SNAP that received less than what they were supposed to receive for the month are also included in the percentage rate.

Brandon Lipps, the Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services at the agency, said that most improper payments are due to “human errors”—either because of state agencies miscalculating benefits or benefit recipients giving state agencies the wrong information.

The USDA said that state agencies cause about 60 percent of these errors while the remaining 40 percent is due to benefit recipients not providing the proper information about their income, place of residence, and other necessary details the agency needs to provide them the right amount in benefits.

The national percentage rate is an average of state agencies’ accuracy in paying the correct amount in SNAP benefits to food stamp recipients and does not always reflect fraud from food stamp users, according to the USDA.

Wait...this is telling me that $4 BILLION is just 6.3% of what we hand out every year?

No wonder we’re broke! If you don’t work, you don’t eat!

I’m shocked, I tell ya. Shocked!

Not.

If they’re admitting to that much, triple the number and it’ll be closer to the truth.

Just 6.3% of handouts from the Department of Agriculture!

Yes, this is why we are broke.

Department of Defense and Homeland security, together, are only 16% of the budget.

I discovered from one of my renters that virtually all of her food stamp money went to high end meat cuts which she sold to buy beer and cigarettes. I am told by other renters that this is “normal.” The several times I went there to do maintenance I never saw any actual food beyond high calorie snacks. When she abandoned the place, in August, she left the refrigerator stuffed with steaks. She took the two cases of beer. The power was off.

Speaking to a clerk in the local food store, she said, “People with food stamps buy the most expensive meat and all pre-prepared meals. People who pay with their own money generally buy the cheapest cuts and food they prepare themselves.”

I have a friend whose husband lost his job in the economic downturn in 2008, I think?

She is SO GOOD with money, that the food stamps they were allowed for her family of three for a short period of time was stretched far enough for her to feed them for a year BEYOND the time the benefits were no longer needed and husband was back to work. she just stocked up on the basics: rice, flour, sugar, peanut butter, canned goods, etc.

This stuff just BLOWS my mind when I think of how easily I fed three adults and three teen boys back in the day. Of course I know how to cook from scratch, we hunt and fish and had a big garden and laying hens back then, too.

My MIL fed a family of 14 at one time - with NO assistance from the Government on a ONE paycheck household! ‘On Monday I would go to the Dairy and buy 20 gallons of milk. On Tuesday I hit the day-old bakery rack and bought 20 loaves of bread...’

THOSE skills should be REQUIRED TEACHING for everyone getting some sort of government assistance! *

President Trump needs ME as one of his Economic Advisors, LOL!

*Unless disabled or a little baby of course!

Look at the OMB budget. The entire income tax revenue goes to entitlements. The entire federal government operates on borrowed money.

It really should be that simple. There is trash to be picked up on the side of roads. There is grass to be mowed and brush to be cleared in parks. And there are thousands of people lying in rest home beds who would love to have someone come visit.

And the employed person will get more than just a paycheck. Honest work brings dignity.

Another popular food stamp scam is the can goods resell scam. This is usually done at smaller mom-and-pop stores. The food stamp guy buys, say, $50 worth of canned goods. Cases of Pepsi or Coke are often the preferred product. They’re nonperishable, and easy to store.

Then he waits a day or two. Maybe he goes back to that same store. Or he goes to another cooperating store. “Hey, pal. I’ve got $50 worth of canned goods here. Yours for $20 cash.”

Indeed!
As a retailer, I can tell you a majority of SNAP recipients have no idea how to shop, cook, conserve, etc. The WIC moms often only buy fruit, I think because they don’t have to cook It? Rarely do I see any SNAP user flinch at the price of berries or try to stretch their dollar to stock up on potatoes and other basics. I have personally advocated for required workshops to teach basic shopping, nutrition, and cooking skills. Never going to happen!

When I saw a Memphis municipal court judge driving a convertible Mercedes Benz, enter the local Kroger and but her groceries with an EBT card, I knew we as a country are finished.

What is the US population today? A quick DDG search turned up this US Gvt web site that reports 328,035,930. If we take the fraud amount and divide it by the population, 63,603,595,754 / 328,035,930, we get $193.89 in fraud per person in the US.

Think about that the next time you're at the grocery. To me, that number is outrageous and makes my blood boil.

As an intake interviewer at a local food bank, I talk with folks all the time that are on food stamps. Some of them are quite open about how they cheat on food stamps. I could write a book.

That is true. My brother had a teen single mother staying at his house for a short time who had spent her adult life on food stamps. He was amazed she didn't know the basics of providing a normal meal to her children. Also, she would take out a huge package of food, give a little to the kids, then throw the rest away.

He and his wife did their best to educate them in the short time they had to little avail. That was years ago and the mother is doing better today but will never have the horse sense that was common knowledge 40 years ago.

Your idea is perfect. A class on food purchasing and eating proper meals should be required before they get the food stamps - and pass a test at the end. More classes on cooking should be available at least.
