Great. More dead wood cleared.
So how is that incorrect? The purpose of NATO was to keep tbe Soviet Union out of Western Europe. The Soviet Union dissolved 27 years ago and we have pushed NATO east to the Russian border, while at the same time very few NATO members spend the required 2% of their GDPs on defense (Estonia actually does).
Keep an eye on where he ends up.
The State Department has long been one of the most Anti-American forces in the world, at least since Woodrow Wilson's time.
I hereby offer my services to the Trump Administration in the capacity of Ambassador to Estonia.
Please contact me through the usual channels.
“He has served 3 decades so under a couple of Presidents actually.”
All the more reason that he leave. The DOS is infested with liberals, a lot of whom are gay, who work at crossed purposes to the government they allegedly serve. Just like the DOJ and FBI. We need a lot of “turnover” to fix the State Department. I say good riddance!
All Obama leftovers should be dumped.
The outgoing Obama White House directed all U.S. ambassadors who are political appointees to resign their posts as of Inauguration Day, January 20. This guy didn't go. And yet...
That is common, typical practice, State Department spokesman John Kirby said Friday, and he confirmed that ambassadors who are career members of the U.S. Foreign Service about 70 percent of the top American envoys abroad were not asked to offer their resignations. The politically appointed ambassadors are being pulled back because they are the representatives of the outgoing administration of President Barack Obama, according to the president of the American Academy of Diplomacy, Ronald Neumann. When you are a political appointee for this or any other administration, you have no expectation of staying beyond the inauguration of the new administration, Kirby said.
Further, just this past April, Trump came out with strong Baltic region support, saying We are very protective of the Baltic region We have great friends there.
This guy did a diplomatic tour of duty in Russia. This may be a stretch, and yea maybe he decided it's time to double-dip and join a liberal think-tank...but maybe he was on a few cables that suggest DNC collusion, and he was offered a choice of retirement or indictment?
“freeloader”
Not necessarily so, just another milking stool worn out. Now, how to delay prompt & accurate disbursement of his retirement checks.
President Trump sure can flush out the LIB debris. This bum should have left 33 years ago. Good riddance to this loser.
> 33 years
He grew up in a different era and I’d bet hasn’t progressed with technology. 33 years ago most in the state department could just pick up a phone and talk to their peer anywhere in the world. Or get their higher-ups on the phone right away (i.e. if the boss was playing golf, etc).
When it could take hours or even days to correct a statement to another country, it was very important that every statement said exactly what an experienced diplomat carefully created.
Many in the state department are still using processes and language that made sense when it could take over a month for George Washington to get a message to London and just as long to get an answer. Diplomats had to be very careful; account for potential changes during that time; let ambassadors know what was going on; and how to respond with different reactions from the King (especially if things had changed as the letter was traveling by ship).
Trump can offend Estonia with a tweet before breakfast; make up during breakfast; and let diplomats have a video call with peers to work out details that morning. The diplomats don’t have to be in Estonia, but can fly to most parts of the world in a day or hours if needed. Older diplomats who can’t understand that need to retire.
The population of Estonia was 1.3 million in 2016. This is fewer than many American cities. I wonder how much this mas was making in salary and benefits for being a 31 year full ambassador for such a tiny country.
“The Foreign Policy report said the news of Melville’s early retirement came as a shock to several U.S. State Department officials, who described the career diplomat as a “consummate professional” and someone who “never let domestic politics impact his job.”
Probably with a nice pension paid for by you.
Trump needs to make even more such statements to rid us of the rest of the conflicted diplomats who put the interests of other countries ahead of ours.
Yay!!!
What a pussy.

Spot on. And its worth noting that McCarthy was proven correct about Soviet Communist influence in the U.S. government by the Venona papers, as M. Stanton Evans showed in Blacklisted by History. And a large number of those working with the Soviets were in the State Department.
For far too long the State Department has been the province of Eastern Ivy League Leftists. They are not representing Main Street.
He was there for three years. He was about to be replaced any way in the normal course of events.
Melville spent most of his career in management. This was his last assignment before retirement regardless. I remember him serving in East Berlin while I was assigned to West Berlin. This is just grandstanding. Maybe he hopes a Dem will win in 2020 and he can get another ambassador gig as a reward.
Into six figures for sure.
Its probably something you could find out with an FOIA request. You might even be able to find it online.
Bye, bye.
