As scores of young people crowded into a hearing room in the Wilson Building on Wednesday, D.C. Council members saw the future of D.C. politics.
“There are multiple future council members and a future mayor in this room,” said D.C. Council member Charles Allen (D-Ward 6).
But before they run for office, Allen wants to make them voters.
A bill he introduced in April would do just that, lowering the voting age to 16.
If passed, the bill would enfranchise up to 10,600 16- and 17-year-olds, according to Census Bureau data.
It would also be historic.
The nation’s capital would become the first municipality in the country to allow minors to vote for president, and the biggest city to let them vote in local races.
In recent years, three nearby Maryland communities — Takoma Park, Hyattsville and Greenbelt — along with Berkeley, Calif. — have lowered the voting age in their municipal elections to 16. There are similar campaigns underway in cities as large as San Francisco and towns as small as Ashfield, Mass.

My opinion only:
I think that if you can join the military service then you should be able to vote. I joined the Navy in 1962 at the age of 16. (16 if you got both parents to sign, 17 if only one and 18 without parental authorization.) I think they dropped the 16 later on for unknown reasons, but it’s still 17 now.
It always irked me that I could fight for my country, but I could not vote, smoke or buy a beer.

Well, my wife would tell you that the age of majority for men should be 40 and for women 18, lol! But, I’m of the school “if you’re old enough to fight and die in the military you’re old enough to do everything else”.
As for owning a gun. I purchased my first .22LR rifle at the age of 14, so that I could take marksmanship and gun safety classes in school.
In your time the public school system was not training students to be good leftist Democrats, as they are now, so at 17 prior to HS graduation for some...they have not been in real world enough to know how full of crap the left is!

We need to clean up what is being taught in our school system, before lowering voting age, IMHO. The NEA is nothing but a propaganda organization paying those who are re writing textbook information and teaching things to destroy our country!

There is a reason that the age to vote should be higher, not lower, and it is Maturity. In fact the age to vote should be 25.

Our decline started with Roosevelt. Soon after taking office he had the US government declare bankrupcy (3/9/1933). There were strings. His buddies in the Soviet Union guaranteed our debt but the strings were:
. Create the framework for the New Deal and all its blight on the US population
. Suspend the Gold Standard (8/19/1935) and confiscate all metal non-jewelry gold.
. Implement a social security system welfare (8/4/1935)

Yes, we had a lot of school changes since 1917 and the McGuffey readers were removed from schools, and Karl Marx philosophy introduced.... at least the parents were teaching patriotism, until the 1960s and then even parents were not teaching children what they needed to know... some were, but not enough!
