The Supreme Court Shortlist
The Weekly Standard ^ | June 27, 2018 | FRED BARNES

Here are five judges who could potentially replace the retiring Anthony Kennedy. The retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy today gives President Trump a second nominee to the Supreme Court and an opportunity to strengthen the hold of conservatives on the court majority with a younger, more conservative successor to Kennedy.

Five federal appeals court judges are at the top of the list of potential nominees:

Brett Kavanaugh, 53, of Maryland, a major figure in conservative legal circles, sits on the D.C. Circuit Court. He is known for his impressive decisions and writings while sitting on a court that President Obama stacked with liberals.

Amul Thapar, 49, once a U.S. attorney in Kentucky, is a favorite of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. He was one of four men who were interviewed by Trump after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016. A federal judge at the time, Thapar was elevated to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals by Trump in 2017.

Amy Coney Barrett, 46, born in Louisiana, taught at Notre Dame's law school before Trump named her to the 7th Circuit in 2017. If the president decides to pick a woman, she is regarded as the likeliest choice, both because her sterling reputation and age.

Thomas Hardiman, 52, of Pittsburgh, is on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, along with Trump’s sister, senior judge Maryanne Trump Barry. Hardiman came in second when the president chose Neil Gorsuch for the Scalia seat. Trump was known to think highly of Hardiman and to consider him a possibility for the next vacancy.

Raymond Kethledge, 51, grew up in Michigan and is a George W. Bush appointee to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. He is less well-known in judicial circles than the others and thus is the dark horse in group.

Amy Coney Barrett on the surface looks like a real good fit for a Trump pick. But only read a little about her so far.

End the east coast elitist monopoly.

Most Supreme Court justice went to Harvard or Yale Law School. It's the same incestuous group taught by the same liberal professors.

It's time to find people who went to law universities in the American heartland.

I can see it now. Trump appoints a young, attractive, intelligent women to the supreme court. And the Democrats have to decide whether to get nasty and take her out or hold back to keep from negatively affecting their midterm election chances. Get the popcorn ready.

Good time to break up the Yale/Harvard cartel on the court.

Like was mentioned: good to see some justices from the midwest & south instead of the same crew from the two coasts.

Most importantly...keep them around 50 years of age & younger.

It won’t matter male or female/ black or white or Hispanic the left has to Bork the person. It’s all they have. Any senator in the gop that takes part in a borking won’t last long. The red state Dems are in trouble. They are voted out or ostracized if re-elected. Hopefully Mitch doesn’t screw this up.

Amy Coney Barrett would be attacked for her Catholicism, especially by Dianne Feinstein.

This would anger many Catholics and thereby help the Republicans win the Catholic vote in November.

The Democrats were already bigoted with her on her lower court appointment. She taught Law at Norte Dame and is a lifelong Roman Catholic. Feinstein treated that like she was in a witches coven -- a lot of talk at the time.

Susan Collins would be disturbed -- they would try to make her say she would recuse herself from every decision where the Catholic Church has a position and promise never to go to Mass again.
