WASHINGTON (Reuters) U.S. President Donald Trump urged Republicans lawmakers on Friday to drop their efforts to pass comprehensive immigration legislation until after the November elections that he hopes will see more party members voted into Congress.
The Republican president, faced with a public outcry over his policy that separated children from their migrant parents at the U.S. border with Mexico, tried to refocus the immigration debate on Congress in a series of early posts on Twitter.
Despite Republican control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the partys slim 51-49 majority in the latter chamber makes some Democratic support necessary to pass most legislation.
Elect more Republicans in November and we will pass the finest, fairest and most comprehensive Immigration Bills anywhere in the world, Trump said on Twitter.
Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November. Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem. We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave! he said.

I think that the President assesses that he is likely to get a better deal from the next Congress than from this one.
The bill they are proposing takes the DACA issue totally away (granting a path to citizenship, that millions will be able to use), leaving no leverage to reform chain migration (the single biggest problem), or to extract a big up front funding for the wall.
It is possible that seeing the internal polling, or knowing of the scandals that will break on the Democrats, that the President anticipates keeping the house and improving in the Senate. He has started talking about a Red Wave.
The trend line is moving the Republicans’ way.
He’s planning on a November Red Tsunami, then Congresscan pass real reform.
Mexico
When did we ever own Mexico?
The President has already won on the immigration issue by campaigning for a border wall. Now he needs to find a way to fund it. But waiting for Congress to repair it’s faulty immigration law is to cast pearls before swinefor. Trump is right to use it as leverage for the midterms, “Build the Wall” could very well be the midterm cry for many of the would-be GOP candidates this fall, with Trump helping them GOTV.

In the Mexican War, Mexico was totally defeated. We took the southwest as a result, but could have tsken it all.

We can’t give back what we “could have taken”. Your wording was way off.
I’m glad we didn’t take it.
Good points.
The new president to be of Mexico wants millions of Mexicans to come up here. That’s going to help get the wall built.
Well, we know Ryans Bill is amnesty . We know anything coming out of the Senate will be amnesty. Not good things for Republicans to run on!
Maybe hes hoping enough RINOs will get replaced in the midterms.
Currently it is. I hope that in success, Republicans remember God and kneel in genuine humility. This is something that I pray there would be any sign of with Donald Trump. He talks a good American culture revivalist line. He looks a lot like JFK in policies. But somehow the “in God do we trust” is hard to see. I pray that if Donald believes in private, it will come out as an explicit public confession soon. Which might not happen until Donald really slips up then a miracle occurs that saves his bacon.
OR is if guaranteed......
Pure and simple Rino is what is holding up all that could be accomplished good in the house that supports our American First presiding President
We had it. We gave most of it back. Could have kept it all.
We wouldn’t be having these current problems had we kept it.
We never had it. We only controlled certain small areas and dictated terms to the Mexicans to end the war. We never controlled territory.
If we had tried to take Mexico we’d have had worse problems than Maximillian ever had. They were not about to let the Gringos take over.
Thank God we didn’t try.
Now we are seeing Reconquista and how do you like that?
It is inevitable.
The illegals had best vote GOP.
Which needs to be pointed out to EVERYONE who claims this is Trump's doing.
We had defeated their army, taken their capital, and annexed a third of their territory. I’d call that pretty decisive
