WASHINGTON - (AP) -- Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has drafted an executive action for President Donald Trump that would direct her department to keep families together after they are detained crossing the border illegally. She was at the White House where Trump told reporters he would be "signing something" shortly.
The effort to end what has become a major crisis for the Trump administration was outlined by two people familiar with Nielsen's thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the effort before its official announcement.
It's unclear exactly what the president might be supporting, but he said he would be signing something "in a little while."

Easier to figure out where they came from and send them back if they’re all together

Wait are you actually saying that you thought they were taking kids away from people who came here legally and applied for asylum?
Geebus... are you new here?
Ooops... I guess you are new here (Sept 2017)
The liberal media is LYING TO YOU. You will learn that if you spend any time here.
The kids being ‘separated’ are from people who crossed ILLEGALLY and were thrown in jail. You can’t put kids in jail with the parents, so they go into a care facility.
They are also finding that a large percentage are not even their real children.
Also, 10,000 of the 12,000 currently in govt care CAME WITHOUT PARENTS.
The wall only exists in our dreams or campaign rallies. Trump is pragmatic enough to know the wall will never be funded by a Uniparty controlled Congress. I expect however the President will continue to use "the wall" as a rallying cry for the faithful.
Where are these people crossing the border?
The people who enter at a checkpoint and request asylum are not arrested. the families are intact in a residential center run by HHS. It is the people who cross illegally and arrested who are separated from the children because the children cannot be held in a jail.
Is it true that they have a choice of deportation as a family unit or to be separated?

I am just one PERSON. I cannot do everything!
But, because I am one PERSON, I CAN DO SOMETHING!
I dont know but it is true that of 12,000 minors in custody 10,000 were never with an adult in the first place. So there’s no way to reunite them with parents other than to send them home.
Just bring them in and hold them in motels and feed them until their status as asylum seekers can be verified. If verified then process them. If unverified after 6 months ship the whole family home. Charge all the expenses to the foreign aide account of their home country. This procedure will incentivize their country of origin to do something since they will not be getting the US funding that goes to the asylum seekers (to line their pockets in many cases).
