Why Aren’t More Men Working?
New York Times ^ | 06/16/2018 | By N. Gregory Mankiw

Posted on 06/16/2018 5:41:18 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

With unemployment at 3.8 percent, its lowest level in many years, the labor market seems healthy.

But that number hides a perplexing anomaly: The percentage of men who are neither working nor looking for work has risen substantially over the past several decades.

The issue, in economist’s jargon, is labor force participation. When the Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys households, every adult is put into one of three categories. Those who have a job are employed. Those who are not working but are searching for a job are unemployed. Those who are neither working nor looking for work are counted as out of the labor force.

This last group is ignored when calculating the unemployment rate. The presumption is that if a person without a job isn’t looking for one, then he or she doesn’t want one, and the joblessness is not a problem. But is that really accurate?

The data show some striking changes over time. Among women, the share out of the labor force has fallen from 66 percent in 1950 to 43 percent today. That is not surprising in light of changing social norms and the greater career opportunities now open to women.

Men, however, exhibit the opposite long-term trend. In 1950, 14 percent of men were out of the labor force. Today, that figure stands at 31 percent.

Some of this change is easy to explain. People now spend more years in school, delaying their start of work. In addition, as life expectancy rises, people have longer retirements. A man retiring at age 65 in 1950 could expect to live another 13 years. Today, a man retiring at that age has an average retirement of 18 years.

OMG you poor liddle bitty men so abused....yes, there is this huge war on boys and men and its all the vomen's fault...

men are getting on disability faster...because they go into cushy union jobs and get "hurt"...

men go into the military and get "hurt"...what's the figure now...about 20% retire on disability..

and lets just put this out there...women work in health care....there are plenty of well paying nursing jobs to be had so WHERE THE HECK ARE THESE POOR LIDDLE MEN because I know for a fact that there has been a lot of outreach for males to enter nursing but few takers....

give me the WW2 generation of men any day...fought a hard war and few went on disability...everyone got home and started work and then married and then families...

but maybe it is indeed just the lack of testosterone in males nowadays...

so many peter pans...

In 68 years it has changed from 4 to 11%. While it’s going the wrong direction, that’s hardly worth a headline like this.

Well “Duh!”

You can’t “tell” them!

But seriously, I STRONGLY urge you to read any and all “female empowerment” books you can get your hands on, and doubtless you’ll notice a distinct pattern emerge in Every. Damn. One of them.

All these books will tell you women’s motivations are different from men. (They’re not, differing only in magnitude for any given objective.) The useful part is such books will tell you EXACTLY what women “do,” as in “behavior.” What they won’t tell you is the real reason for “why” they are doing it.

Oh, the author will always spew some codswallop designed to appeal to female vanity, or sense of victimhood for the “why.” Ignore it, it’s useless. Besides, women like to pretend the “why” of their behavior is some kind of abstruse, 4d Chess calculation: it’s not. It’s the product of multiple competing internal motivations, and the one you’re seeing right now is the one that is currently winning that competition.

But if you pay attention to the “what” the author says women are doing for any given behavior the motivation becomes instantly clear; just ask yourself what would cause you to act the same way, but don’t reject any answer as too base, sexist, petty, puerile, or otherwise “beneath” a self-respecting adult.

Remember, they think, with good reason, you can’t suss out what they’re doing apart from self-crafted cloak of female “ difference” and “complexity.” And they’ll never admit to what they’re really aiming to accomplish if the knowledge of that goal will cause them to “lose face” in any, and I mean ANY way.

With all that said, the final piece is this: women taught Bill Clinton everything he knows about what to do when you’re truly, unequivocally, comprehensively, “caught.” Study him, and you’ll know your “her.”

When was the last time you were in a hospital? There are male nurses everywhere!

And thank God for it! I generally find them FAR more competent than their female counterparts; so much so, I’ll request them if I don’t fear retaliation from the female nurse.

"It reminds of of the quote from fight club that Brad Pitt used and maybe that’s it, men are getting tired of having to slave at some stupid job to buy shit they don’t need."

Thank you for the contemporary perspective. I understand it and why. Things look pretty bleak. Looks like all of the women want to advertise themselves as "pre-owned" and always available for anyone with a fun ride. No one wants kids and a nice, little house with a white, picket fence.

But is it really a contemporary perspective? Have a look at these professional hypnotists sponsored by the '68ers: the leaders of the long trend towards global slavery. Maybe they should be called '66ers.

"Let's Live For Today"
The Grass Roots

When I think of all the worries
That people seem to find
And how they're in a hurry
To complicate their minds
By chasing after money
And dreams that can't come true
I'm glad that we are different
We've better things to do
May others plan their future
I'm busy loving you

One, two, three, four
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
(Hey, hey, hey)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Live for today

We were never meant to worry
The way that people do
And I don't need to hurry
As long as I'm with you
We'll take it nice and easy
And use my simple plan
You'll be my lovin' woman
I'll be your lovin' man
We'll take the most from living
Have pleasure while we can

Two, three, four
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
(Hey, hey, hey)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Live for today

Baby, I need to feel you inside of me
I got to feel you deep inside of me
Baby, please come close to me
I got to have you now, please
Please, please
Gimme some-a loving
Gimme some-a loving
To gimme some-a loving
To gimme some-a loving
Baby, gimme some-a loving
Gimme some-a loving
Got to have all your loving
Gimme some-a loving
I need all your loving
Give me some love now
I need all your loving

Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
(Hey, hey, hey)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today

I'm in my 60s and was born with the boomers. Never could stand my generation, though. Thoroughly fed up with it by the age of 31, I decided to make that more official. I was back in school at the time, but that didn't stop me from joining the Guard to go to Ft. Leonard Wood for 13 weeks of truly mind-cleansing spiritual experience.

Writing this took a little time. I hope that it's helpful to someone.

Have a look at some of the work of Tommy Robinson, Brittany Pettibone, Lauren Southern, Martin Sellner and many others like them. There are many YouTube videos and websites. Listen to what they have to say, and take back what is yours. Our nation was not always so much of an oligarchy under global and local tyrants.

They are being harassed and kicked out of good paying jobs by women. Every blue collar white male I know has two jobs, both barely over minimum wage.
Plus the more they make, the more is taken in child support for children they haven’t been allowed to spend two hours with in years.
There are zero jobs above minimum wage in my town for blue collars. hundreds of people were laid off or lost their jobs in our small town. More on the way.
I’m giving it six months, then we will have to move.

“They are being harassed and kicked out of good paying jobs by women.”

For every two of them, there’s a lazy, low-life free-loader who is happy... no, THRILLED... to have his woman go to work and support him. Even worse: He expects it. That is an unintended consequence of the feminist movement. Feminism provided the opportunity for, and blessing to, men to slack off in their roles of being the family provider. Rush has talked about this for decades.

Q: Why aren’t more men working?
A: Because they don’t want to, and they don’t have to.

Because the left knows how to destroy masculinity - put men out of work and thereby slice their balls off.

Discrimination in colleges. Proven.

Discrimination in job applications. Proven.

“with all of those women, there is much more work to be done by the men who actually are there.”

Give me a break. The men want huge affirmation just for showing up dressed in a suit. They make more work than they do. They talk more than anything, they are exhausting to be around and drain energy from women trying to get things done.

I am semi-retired at age 55 plus. I am looking for a new business to get into but with health issues and the fact we worked hard to pay off all real estate loans and large purchases early on I have no need to get a job for the sake of a paycheck. Wife decided to go back to work because she was bored and decided to help our daughter with shcool loans and a car. I've found a new business I will likely get into but it will not be a full blown business with employees and such. I am just tired of all the crap one has to go through satisfying the demands of the Federal, State and local governments put on a business with employees and a store frint etc.

But as such I am counted as "not in the workforce" it is my way of "going Galt" I am done working hard to feed the leaches.

I was the first female JAG officer ever at Ft Leonard Wood, MO. And the only one for a year or so.

Not at all different. The former seems more common on FR, while the latter is more likely to be asserted elsewhere.

I live in a pot legal state. I drive by dozens of men in their 20s every morning that smoke instead of work. Meanwhile, trade jobs go unfilled or filled by illegals.

You’re right. Many of these men are working but they’re not reporting it.

In Maine, when they began to require able bodied people to work, volunteer or enroll in work training to get food stamps, they had an 80% drop in the program.

That tells me that these people were busy doing something that paid more than what they were getting in food stamps.

BTW - more than half of those people were smokers spending an average of more than $100 a month on cigarettes. Imagine what they were spending for other kinds of smokes.

I’m sure I read on FR that there are no negative social consequences of marijuana use, so I think you must be mistaken.
