Can any Southern Baptist around here fill us in on what's going on? Thank you.
There are liberal evangelicals but that isnt true of all of them.
Surrender?
“The Southern Baptist Convention” speaks for the Southern Baptist -Convention-. There is no hierarchy above the church. The convention selected a 40 something millenial mentality guy who is one of those celebrity-type preachers. He is famous for taking his first job heading up a church on the condition that “Baptist” was removed from the name.
Just another popstar evangelical shopping mall church type. So now the media is trying to pretend that the SBC is like the Vatican for Baptists.
The SBC is mostly a cooperative effort for missionary work, publications, etc. The sponsor a couple of seminaries.
No gospel? No salvation from death and the eternal exile from God? But..we have gender and melatonin skin balance in the participants of our rituals...if thats all the new SBC is about..it may as well be dead...but also consider the writer of the article.
That might be all he looks for...meaningless ritual...
Here’s a test to see where they or any other religious group really stands: Call up 1000 churches and ask if they will ‘gay marry’ you. Tell them you both attend the denomination or group elsewhere and are millionaires, willing to contribute a generous amount for a clandestine ceremony or whatever if the official stance is no ‘gay marriage’. And see what they say.
I predict none that say yes are going to have Southern Baptist in the name.
Freegards
SBC wants to the next “Church of England”
They are going after the “much admired” Episcopal numbers.
In other words a silly group not to be taken seriously.
Looks like the Southern Baptists will also have to untethered themselves from the Apostle Paul, who had Christians put to death.
However, actual murder is not near as bad, in the eyes of this Leftist fool, as an unsubstantiated allegations against Trump.
An I think these representatives of the various congregations are in for a surprise when they go back home.
But the fact that this millenial huckster was elected president of the convention is embarrassing. A true baptist church should operate as originally intended. One congregation.... nothing above. As for missions, do that where you are. I am not aware that all the souls in America that need saving are already saved. No need to go to Africa or Brazil or Indonesia.
Back to basics, and leave the leftists to their gay friendly, democrat loving, shopping mall churches.
As noted the Atlantic is a libtard rag. For any non Christion readers of the FR blog, Christians (Southern Baptists) are defined as Christians through belief in God’s Word -—the Bible. Non-Bible believers are in need of Salvation!
Sodomites and race baiters (Obammy and crocked Hillary voters) reject God’s Word.
There is nothing liberal about the theology of JD Greear. Some of these comments are way out of line. This is the same convention that just cut ties with the DC Baptist Convention over its liberal theology so it certainly is not “trending liberal.” There is, however, a change in tactics in how to engage the current culture. The prior political engagement ultimately was a failure - it doesn’t do any good to “win” political battles culturally if ultimately people don’t agree with what you believe and why you believe it, and that doesn’t win anyone for the gospel regardless.
I would actually agree the political ties were over the top at times - Paige Patterson was a big part of steering things in that direction, and he was just removed from office after revelations of his misconduct.
I am SB. I have read a lot that the liberal wing of the SBC is trying to take over and take the liberal road. If they start this supporting the homo crap, our church is with-drawing from the SBC and going alone. All SBC churches are independent churches, and do not have to do what they say. We do as we wish. But, I will vote to withdraw if they start this liberal crap. That means our money stays with us and does not go to them.
I am not a southern Baptist, but if you want to know how and what the convention voted for, go to their website. They always put everything that is decided, on it.
Too bad Adrian Rogers is no longer here to drive the liberals out
This was more about getting out of politics. Pence asked to speak, he was not invited, and there was a kerfuffle around it. Some wanted him not to speak. In the end he was allowed but many opposed it.
I think this is mostly good. People of any persuasion should be welcomed to an SBC church and hear the gospel and not a political commentary. I think Trump ended what Jimmah started which was considering a candidates christian morals as a litmus test for office.
There is a man by the name of Russell Moore that absolutely hates Donald Trump and he is head of “Ethics” group with a huge budget, his main office is in DC and he is working against the President.
I get very frustrated that a portion of my tithes go to that man, I may designate it all for our building committee.
as a southern baptist i can say the churches are all locally controlled. about half will not baptize anyone this year. focusing more on GOD and less on politics is how i read this. prior to 2016 i said GOD is not a republican but Satan would be a democrat, now Trump has shown the deep state uniparty for what it is and i am through blindly following the republicans, so this doesn’t bother me at all. As long as the convention continues to state the Bible is the perfect literal and infallible Word that is what matters
In this interview, pastor Tom Buck relates how at the SBC, someone called Matt Chandler a social Marxist, and Chandler said that he would embrace that label.
My SBC church will not be changing anything. There are a lot of gray areas in the Bible, but homosexuality is not one of them.

Who's left?
..SBC on an apology tour in recent years for things like racial issues now gender issues. Moving more toward liberal ideas though holding “officially” to the Baptist Faith & Message, which is doctrinally solid. We will closely watch what Greear says and does over the next couple of years—if we have that long...
