WASHINGTON (AP) House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday he's not comfortable with a Trump administration policy that separates children and parents at the southern border, as House Republicans, under increasing pressure to address the humanitarian crisis, raced to finish a new immigration bill.
"We don't want kids to be separated from their parents," Ryan said, adding that the policy is being dictated by a court ruling that prevents children who enter the country illegally from being held in custody for long periods.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi pushed back on that assessment, saying that President Donald Trump could "stop the practice on a dime."
She called the Trump administration's separation policy "barbaric," adding: "It has to stop."
Some Republicans are beginning to distance themselves from the policy. News stories have highlighted that families are being separated as they enter the country illegally from Mexico. Many of those families are seeking asylum in the U.S.
The separation policy has become a political flashpoint at a time when House Republican leaders are trying to craft compromise legislation on immigration. The bill aims to address thorny issues that have bedeviled Congress for years.
Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., tweeted Thursday that he told a constituent that, "I am asking the White House to keep families together as much as we can."
Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Kan., said he's "heartbroken" by the separations and is working to find a solution to keep families together. His comments were in response to a letter from local officials urging him to demand that the Department of Homeland Security end the practice.

“In the long run, it will be safer for the kids.”
Correct.
Separation and tents in the desert is a DETERRENT that should be left in place.
Or the kid robs a bank? Don’t forget that?
Heck, Ryan isn’t comfortable with doing his job. Any other venue, he would be fired.
How long until we can separate Ryan from his job?
It is like a stage magaician, who employs misdirection of attention to hide what is really going on.
I figure if a parent commits a federal crime, then the Dept of Child Services comes in and takes their children while they are incarcerated. How is this different?
This policy was in place before President Trump took office, it is not a Trump policy. I could not care less what happens to criminals entering the country illegally. If they don’t want to their families separated, maybe they should stay in their sh!thole of origin.
You have any extra rooms at your house, Pauly?
Well, if “comfort” is your gauge...
Maybe he can shove them up his butt to keep them safe!
Glad this guy is retiring.
Said this many months ago that America is finished. Immigration will destroy this Country. It already destroyed California and NY is not much better. Load the States with illegal voters that will vote with the communists Democrats and what do you have?
Don’t separate them. Send the entire family back.
If the refugee aspect of the border approach is valid, send the entire family to a detention “tent city” where they are to be held until their claim may be fully vetted. This may take a while, so be prepared for a sometimes long-term detention. It may be practical to set up a detention center either on an offshore US island, or on land that is not considered US soil, like the base at Guantanamo. Shuttle the families there immediately upon arrival, then we talk.
NO releases into the general population under any circumstances.
Why separate them? Deport the entire family. And don’t allow unaccompanied alien children to cross our border into the US. Let the Mexican government humanely house them on their side of the border.
Ryan is ok with Kate Steinle being separated from her dad.
