Tampa, United States: Global warming is expected to make vegetables significantly scarcer around the world, unless new growing practices and resilient crop varieties are adopted, researchers warned on Monday.
By the end of this century, less water and hotter air will combine to cut average yields of vegetables -- which are crucial to a healthy diet -- by nearly one-third, said the report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
A 7.2 Fahrenheit (4 Celsius) increase in temperature, which scientists expect by 2100 if global warming continues on its current trajectory, reduces average yields by 31.5 percent, said the report.
"Our study shows that environmental changes such as increased temperature and water scarcity may pose a real threat to global agricultural production, with likely further impacts on food security and population health," said lead author Pauline Scheelbeek of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Southern Europe, large parts of Africa and South Asia may be particularly affected.
The findings are based on a systematic review of 174 studies examining the impact of environmental exposures on yield and nutritional content of vegetables and legumes since 1975.
Some previous research has pointed to a likely increase in crop yields as carbon dioxide rises, but the current review found that any such boost would be cancelled out by higher greenhouse gases, reduced water availability for irrigation and rising temperatures.

Did you know that conclusion is false. First, there is no man made global warming so they changed the lie to climate change with no measurable standards. But humor me by assuming global warming happened. The new farm land offering food production would double.? Canada into the far. Northern reaches , all of alaska, Siberia, the Arctic and Antarctic regions!! It would blow your mind but it is absolute fantasy.
Are we simply posting more of these articles of late, or has the volume and intensity and abject over the top hyperbole really ramped up far past volume 11 since trump shut down their free money spigot?
These are people who buy Chilean fruit and Mexican vegetables during the winter and never make the connection that "warm" is good and "cold" kills. They fly off and vacation in tropical climates yet still somehow believe, despite the fact that the vast majority of animal and plant species live in such climes, a slight warming of the planet will kill everything. They didn't pay attention in Biology and other science classes when the Carbon Cycle, the Earth's tilted angle and seasons, or the history of recurrent ice ages were explained.
They're the ones who voted in the majority at a "Climate Change" conference to ban that notorious solvent Di-Hydrous Oxide (H2O). They are as ignorant as the most isolated Amazon tribe building models of DC-3's to honor the god that sometimes crosses the sky above their village.

Trees cause a lot of water to evaporate into the air. I say we give more legal protections to the unborn and less legal protections to trees. The United States has more trees than it did 100 years ago.
