The only large-scale car manufacturer in California argues that doing business in the state is hard enough without a fast-developing labor regulation backed by organizations that want to unionize its Fremont plant.
Elon Musk's Tesla is fighting a rule under development by two state agencies that would require it be certified as a "fair and responsible workplace" for its customers to be eligible for taxpayer-backed state electric vehicle rebates.

To Mr. Musk: What part of “big government, corporation-hating, anti-capitalist, left wing lunatics” did you not get, smart guy? Did you really think they would leave you alone if you spoke their language, supported their causes, went to their parties, and stroked their egos? Welcome to the reality of the way the world works. I know it’s a shock, because you thought you had it all figured out since you made a lot of money in your life. As it happens, you weren’t paying attention to the important things.
“The Tesla Model 3 starts at $36K”
That is the short range base 3 model of which none have been made yet. I’m sure Tesla would lose even more per car on those. Out the door you are looking at a minimum of 55k for what Model 3’s that are being built.

South Africa...California...lost in his intelligent bipolar mind...
Is it also true that 80% of electric car drivers LEASE their vehicles as the resale market for them sucks?
We are not talking free market here. The subject is unions and subsidies.
Nevada is close, and you already have a major facility here.
Do the math!
You have to wonder....heres this smart guy, and planning for the future. It would have made perfect sense to locate in a state like Georgia, Mississippi or Alabama. You would have gotten a tax-friendly state....low cost of living...etc. Probably 8-percent of the Tesla car cost....connect direct back to business being done in California.

He practically got the Tesla factory for free from Toyota.

Where do you see that they are losing money per car?
When your business plan depends on government rebates, you’re dancing with the devil. Surprise!
Where do you see that they are losing money per car?Take away the rebates and subsidies, even you will see it when he goes belly up.
Tesla has a new battery plant in N Nevada, just east of Reno, at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.
The bought ad adjacent 30+ acres about a year ago.
When they started their facilities here, I predicted that they would be moving their assembly plant from Fremont, Calif, to Nevada for a number of reasons.
As their productions grows, they cannot expand in Fremont. Cannot go up or out- frozen in size there.
The cost of workmen’s comp in Calif is a over-priced cost of doing ANY kind of business there.
The cost of hauling the batteries for assembly from Nevada across Calif to Fremont isn’t cheap. Diesel fuel is around $3.80 a gallon in Nevada, and much more in Calif.
The employees in Fremont have to pay Calif income taxes——Nevada does not have personal income taxes.
Musk can build his assembly plant in Nevada & stay even further away from Union activists. Most union work in Nevada is centered around the entertainment/hotel/casino businesses.
IF Musk wants any employees from the Fremont plant to come to the new plant in Calif, the price of housing & property taxes in Lyon County- just east of TRIC is attractive to those employees.
However-—IF those current employees want to be smart-—IF they re asked to come, they should consider that offer with an open heart.
Sherwin-Willimsa paint producer was in Emeryville, Calif for YEARS. The state made so many rules, they were down to only making white, water based paint. Sherwin-Williams built a new plant about 30 miles east of TRIC. Employees who refused to work non-union for less $$$ got left behind. They only got 6 months unemployment for that decision-—over 12 years ago.
I predict that Musk is already working on moving his assembly plant to Nevada. The cost savings alone in transporting those batteries will be enormous.
California lawmakers punishes all business’s.
Taxpayers as well.
The Fremont plant is on the brink of reaching 5000 vehicles per week; the stock is up over $10 a share today, part of a 100+buck run over recent weeks. It's laying off 9% of its workforce, which isn't shocking to me, I grew up in Michigan, and very large, short-term layoffs by the Big Three helped build our once-massive bureaucracy. Thanks artichokegrower.
Exactly right.
