Rent is becoming less affordable, particularly those who are low-income, and getting worse. A proposed increase for people using federal housing subsidies will most affect single mothers and their children, putting them at risk for homelessness, increasing their risk for domestic violence.
We knew Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carsons idea to encourage self-sufficiency would hurt, now we know now much: Federal subsidies are expected to jump 20 percent, according to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities for the Associated Press. People already working every day would be squeezed even more.
Over 3.3 million extremely low-income Americans receive housing subsidies, and millions more are homeless or pay more than half their income in rent, locked out of housing subsidies because of HUD limits or lack of low-cost housing.
A majority of domestic violence survivors already have experienced financial abuse. This means their partner has kept them from their finances, wouldnt let them work, harassed them at work by showing up or calling excessively, or purposely destroyed their credit.
Physically abusive partners may abuse women to the point they cannot show up for work and lose their jobs. If women are able to leave an abusive partner, they often can only afford low-cost housing. But where will they go if they cant retreat to the safety of affordable housing?
As a public health researcher embedded in these communities, the answer is simple: Nowhere.

The flip side is free rent prevents domestic violence. Probably global warming too.
Why address the cause when you can address the symptoms? /s
“Welfare is not meant to be a lively hood-—”

Oh,I don’t know, some of the hoods seem pretty lively to me. :-)
.
Amounts are approximate and, to some extent, whimsical. I recommend the following only if you actually like fish. Fishy it is.
CHEATIN' CIOPPINO --- 2 or 3 servings
Smallest can sardines (with bones and skin)
Smallest can smoked oysters
3-4 scallops (or 2-3 oz firm white fish fillet), cut bitesized
Open the fish cans and pour a reasonable amount of the oil into a skillet. If you need more oil, use olive oil. In this oil saute:
Chopped onion
Chopped green pepper
Chopped mushrooms
When done to your satisfaction, add:
3/4 cup bottled salsa
3/4 cup leftover tomato sauce
Shot of V8 juice
Crushed or chopped herbs of your choice.
I used a couple of bay leaves and about a Tbs each of rosemary & thyme. Plus, do not think of skipping 1 Tbs fennel: the fennel makes this dish. If you have fresh fennel in your garden, great, otherwise 1 Tbs crushed fennel seeds work just fine.
Add all seafood and 1 cup red wine, simmer briefly until anything you put in raw, is done. Bite-size white fish and scallops cook very quickly, about 5 minutes. Add a bit of lemon juice and a bit of hot sauce if you wish. Correct seasonings and done.
Eat with good bread to sop up the delicious broth.
Yes, delicious, and so nutritious every cell of your body will go, "Yay!"
“Im pretty sure there is a study linking climate change to domestic abuse.”
Damn! You beat me to it.
That baffles me, too.
Welfare is not meant to be a lively hood
Perhaps if unemployed young women stopped having babies with unemployable men they barely know... it’s a crazy idea, but it just might work!!
Truer words...
I think it is truly evil to force you to pay the expense of raising other people's children. You need your money to raise your children.
It most likely can be linked to Republicans breathing if one searches hard enough.
Why did they not ask “What causes a tight rental market?”
So why not make the abuser leave?
As a retiree, I watch alot of TV. ALL the ‘jude’ shows regularly include people who are on Section 8 housing.
Amazing to me that these women have fancy nail extensions & manicures, fancy hairdos, nicer clothes than anything I have ever owned after working for over 61 years. They all have cell phones, stunning celebrity eyeglass frames handbags and other expensive items while standing in court complaining.
I firmly believe that every single person collecting ANY kind of state or Fed benefit should have to re-qualify every single year.
This article is so poorly written it’s almost incomprehensible.
“Women in abusive relationships are likely to leave abusers when the rents too high.”
Huh??
“We knew Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carsons idea to encourage self-sufficiency would hurt, now we know now much: Federal subsidies are expected to jump 20 percent, according to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities for the Associated Press. What? I don’t think the word subsidy means what the writer thinks it means.
Good question. Before I go any further, let me assure you and other readers of this reply that I'm not an expert. I have no formal training in this area. My contact with these women has been as an intake interviewer at a local non-profit food bank and some time spend at an abused shelter working with therapy dogs.
Having said that, here is my limited experience: The abused can take out a legal restraining order against the abuser. But, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Assuming the abused is not living in a shelter, the abuser can visit the abused, do lots of damage and be gone in a short period of time. The abused will be traumatized by this and may or may not call the police. Especially if the abuser has threatened even more mayhem if the police are called.
If the police are called, they will respond, call EMS if necessary, make a report and make an effort to find the abuser. Like finding a needle in a haystack.
If the abused is living in a shelter, the abuser is not likely to visit but there are still ways for the abuser to make the abused's life a living hell. If the abused is working, the abuser may call work and make threats. The abuser may wait for the abused to leave work and make threats/attack the abused then.
It's a real problem. The goal is to make the abuser's life as difficult as possible.
I could write a book, but won't :)
“”Federal subsidies are expected to jump 20 percent””
“”How is increasing federal subsidies going to hurt the renter?””
Glad you asked as I was getting ready to. I keep saying - it doesn’t make any sense to continue reading things that make us shake our heads!
If less resources were devoted to subsidizing single moms, perhaps fewer women would decide to become single moms.
If those sanctuary cities for illegals would put Americans first, especially with education and job training, this would be solved.
I’m afraid the chickens were oppressed and Wal*Mart and not at the price I like to buy them.
Sometimes, they have TWO 18-egg containers shrink-wrapped for $1.36 (cheapest I found) to $1.69. I don’t get to that store as much.
Nice. Thanks. Gotta admit, I’m not a fish guy but I’m sure there are several that will enjoy that.
For me. a nice fish dinner is Long John Silver’s. No doubt there are many reeling in horror. LOL
Extra malt vinegar and hot sauce. Fried clams with tartar sauce. Of course it’s a lot more expensive these days.
