'Didn't you burn down the White House?' Trump uses War of 1812 to justify Canada as security threat

During a testy phone call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. president Donald Trump reportedly cited the War of 1812 in order to justify seeing Canada as a security threat.

“Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?” he told Trudeau, according to sources cited by CNN.

The reason for the call was the U.S. imposition of tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, which Trump has justified on national security grounds.

The new tariffs, announced last week, sparked disbelief from across the political spectrum in Canada. For more than a century, the United States has had no problem building military equipment out of Canadian raw materials. Most famously, the country’s first atomic bombs were fuelled in part by Canadian uranium.

“Canada is a secure supplier of aluminum and steel to the U.S. defence industry, putting aluminum in American planes and steel in American tanks,” Trudeau said last week. “That Canada could be considered a national security threat to the United States is inconceivable.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland made the same argument in a CNN appearance, saying “do you really think Canada … represents a national security threat to you?”

Trudeau was apparently arguing Canada’s loyalty directly to the U.S. president when Trump fired back about the Burning of Washington.

In August of 1814, the U.S. federal capital was indeed invaded and burned by troops based in what is now Canada. Facing little to no resistance, the soldiers destroyed both the U.S. Capitol and the presidential mansion in one day of looting and destruction.

The current-day White House, from which Trump was likely taking Trudeau’s call, had to be mostly rebuilt as a result of the fire.

However, the soldiers who sacked Washington were all British.

It went deeper than that. They were at war with France and unilaterally declared no country could trade with them. The United States was a sovereign nation and ignored the Limey threat.

Britain captured our trade ships, confiscated the cargo and compelled our sailors to serve on the Limey ships.

They were wrong. 110%.

It was obviously some combination of a sharp rejoinder and a joke. But the bigger point is the question of who is releasing this? Is it US Deep Staters who continue to leak all of the President’s calls with foreign leaders? Or is it Boy Trudeau the Groper trying to look tough vs. the USA? The USA and Canada will get along fine in the long run due to our mutual interest and longtime very close connections. But if Boy Trudeau thinks he can push the Americans around, he is back to smoking the funny stuff.

> That’s our Trump. LOL

Keeping the media focused on the “important issues” from 1812 instead of trivia like firing of the CFPB.

If the media doesn’t catch on, the people Trump hired and is running interference for will be able to fix so much of the executive branch and the media won’t have a clue how such an “incompetent buffoon as Trump” got so many good things done. (”good” to me, “bad” to them)

This smells like fake news. For some reason, I don’t think Trump - or most people - would remember anything about the War of 1812. It’s something you hear about in the sixth grade, and then forget.

The US had war plans drawn up for an invasion of Canada in the early 1930’s.

Canada is part of the British Monarchy. They did indeed burn down the Whitehouse in 1814 which was an action of the War of 1812.

And since then have fought beside us in two world wars, the Korean War, the Cold War, twice in Iraq and once in Afghanistan. If Trudeau's intent was to show that Canada is hardly a security risk then I think they've done that.

I love this President.

I can just visualize him saying this, and Trudeau, taken aback, blinking...”Er...uh...well...the...uh...I don’t...”

Agreed, Canada always had a governor general, the queens rep in that British colony.

Does not matter if the invaders were from the British empire or mercenaries. The troops left what is now called nova scotia, landed on us soil, and burnt down the capitol.

Therefore, Canada was a bona fide threat, and could be a future threat.
Justin’s and Christine’s argument just got varied

So you have forgotten the Star Spangled Banner?

Just kidding.

Trump’s favorite Pres was Andrew Jackson who played a yuge role two weeks after the war ended.

Nowadays they don't cover much history, just how the guns were bad and the constitution should be changed.

Sounds like fake news designed to support Trudeau’s mischaracterization.

Trudeau is conflating the idea that the tariffs are being applied to Nations that threaten our security, with the true state of affairs where tarrifs are being applied to Nations that threaten the sustainable development of our internal aluminum & steel industries by undercutting our manufacturers or flooding our markets.

Trump is completely correct from a long term historical perspective. There is no guarantee that Canada will remain a faithful ally of the United States and provide us with steel in times of war. Look at the government Mexico is about to elect. Canada is most likely to oppose any war we are involved in.

We'll just annex them temporarily and plunder what we want.
