The disgraced Florida sheriffs deputy who stayed outside as 17 people were slaughtered inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School maintained Tuesday that he was never a coward as parents of slain students railed at him for trying to paint himself as a victim.
The families need to know. I didnt get it right. But it wasnt because of some, Oh, I dont wanna go into that building, oh, I dont wanna face somebody in there. It wasnt like that at all, Scot Peterson said on NBCs Today show Tuesday.
Im never gonna get over this, you know, he said. Those were my kids, you know. I was there to protect those kids.
His appearance on the program comes a day after a Washington Post report in which he said he was haunted by the Valentines Day attack.
According to the report, Peterson, 54, has spent the days since the massacre rehashing what went wrong and asking himself why he didnt run into the building where Nikolas Cruz allegedly was gunning down students and teachers.
But parents of the teens killed during Cruzs rampage werent having it.
Im tired of him trying to paint himself as the victim, Fred Guttenberg, the father of slain 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg, told the Miami Herald. He is not a victim. He created victims. He keeps referring to them as his kids. They are not your kids, Scot Peterson! You let them die!
This interview makes him even more pathetic than he already was. You failed me and my daughter, Guttenberg added. Those people who lost their lives, including my daughter, are victims of his inability to do his job; victims of his failure.

Another grieving dad, Max Schachter, who lost his 14-year-old son, Alex, said he doesnt really care to hear that [Peterson] is having a difficult time.
He did nothing. He stood outside. He knew the guy was inside killing our kids. Its all crap.
He could have been shot. He could have been KILLED! That would have been very bad.
Article tries to sanitize things by not stating that there were stand down orders.
Lawsuits!
Peterson should be asked “You claim you initially thought the shooting was outside the school building. What steps did you then take to find the outdoor shooter and neutralize him before he entered the school to shoot the occupants?”.
It sounds like some of these parents are convinced their child would be alive today if only this guy had run in and gotten himself killed. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but having somebody to blame sometimes helps.
This guy did not do himself any favors with this pathetic interview. He almost looks like he’s smirking the whole time.
But Hogg says it was the NRA. I still have no definitive idea what Hogg was actually doing that day just as the POS coward was letting kids be slaughtered.
When seconds count, the government watches the clock.
Let’s see...he’s being trotted out as a victim by the comPost and FakeNews-NBC. Why is it that I immediately suspect more elitist circling of the wagons?
He was just waking up from his donut coma
[I was there to protect those kids]
Which is why I stayed outside and told others to stay back 500 feet.
IF he had done his job there’s a good chance children would have been saved...
This lowlife should be forced to pay back whatever salary he was paid while he was ‘working’ at the school.
There’s an old adage about the wisdom of keeping your trap shut that ol’ Scot should bone up on.
Putting his life on the line for those kids is what he was paid to do. One of the teachers at that school ran in unarmed to try and help and lost his life. Scott Peterson took the peoples money to do a job and when it came time to do it he stood by and watched as children were massacred!!!
No one said he had to run in and throw himself in front of the shooters gun, but there was things he should and could have been doing instead of cowering in fear outside the building.
A coward dies a thousand deaths they say, if true even that is to good for him.
I wondered when I was young what I would do under pressure; I think all boys wonder. I found out at age 22 on a submarine experiencing a fairly big fire - I headed straight for the fire and was (to my shock) the senior officer present until the fire was out. I have faced several other dangerous situations, but I never wondered again. I know the answer, and it’s always the same. I will face danger if that’s my job/responsibility, including when firearms are involved.
The flip side of that question was my first encounter with union goons. I was undersized and underage (needed school permission to work a job) for my job and had not joined the union. On a technicality, I thought I could avoid that wasted expenses. Two very big union thugs “enlightened” me. They gave me a clear choice: join the union, quit, or broken bones. I quit the job minutes later. I don’t run into a fight I can’t win, but those goons motivated me to make sure I could win the next time around. I practiced, trained, and learned. I can handle most threats.
