I was up there a few times when the space shuttle landed there in the 1990’s. Long drive on some bad roads. Parked and stood around in the dark with 500,000 other people. You stood behind a rope line and security was off road vehicles and helicopters pacing back and forth in from of you. The runway about 1 mile away.

You listened for the double sonic booms then saw the shuttle fly overhead and turn towards the runway and land.
Wish I could see that again.

I asked my uncle who was a aerospace engineer (wind tunnel among other things) if he wanted to go up there to see this and he said no as he had seen the shuttle up close before. I asked when did he go and he replied that he and some of the guys went there to see how the tiles on the shuttle worked out.... I asked if he needed anyone to help steady the ladder.
