House generic ballot a toss-up: poll
The Hill ^ | 06/03/18 | Mallory Shelbourne

The race for control of the lower chamber of Congress is a toss-up, according to a new poll.

The CBS News/YouGov Battleground Tracker shows that if the 2018 midterm elections happened now, Democrats would take 219 seats in the House, while Republicans would take 216.

The tracker has a margin of error of nine seats, making this year’s race for control a toss-up between the two parties.

The poll's results come as Democrats and Republicans prepare for November's midterm elections, when Republicans will defend their majority against a Democratic attempt to flip the lower chamber.

A slim majority of individuals, 51 percent, who said they are casting ballots for Democrats are “mostly” doing so because of the party’s policies. But 49 percent said they are backing a Democrat as a rejection of President Trump and the GOP.

A larger majority, 73 percent, of individuals who are backing a Republican candidate said they are “mostly” voting this way to support the GOP’s policies. Twenty-seven percent said their vote is “mostly” a rejection of the Democrats.

A very short write up from The Hill which means they believe it's even worse for Democrats.

Notice how Republicans are largely voting Republican because of polices while Democrats are voting Democrat because they don't like Trump and Republicans.

My takeaway is that Republican leadership has to stop acting like jerks and start supporting the Deplorable Agenda. Unless they don’t actually support the Deplorable Agenda, and would rather lose the majority than enact what their voting fodder supports.

All the endless hand-wringing over polls. Who's up. Who's down. Blah-blah-blah.

Didn't we learn in 2016 that polls mean nothing?

Generic polls should show that Dem edge in popular vote of 3.6 million illegals with driver’s license voter ID card in California (plus outright vote fraud in Michigan and elsewhere) count along with a few thousands edge for GOP in about twenty states? You could have a 72% Dem vote in CA,OR,WA,NY,MA and a 2% lead for GOP in other states. Not a realistic poll, anyway.

Polls aren't meant to find out how people are voting.

Polls are designed to tell people HOW to vote.

Don't you want to be with the in-crowd?

Wonder if the surrender-monkey Republicans will submit meekly again to a Jumpin'-Jim-Jeffords "power-sharing" arrangement, whereby the Leftist agenda can roll on even if they don't win in November?

If the poll says Dems are break even, it really means they are down 10-15%.

The Republican establishment does what the Donor Class tells them to. They would rather lose than get their money cut off.

This is the first poll I’ve ever seen, which has a margin of error of the number of seats.

I question the methodology. And I question it because elections are held in 435 individual Congressional districts. The makeup of Congress is not determined by allocation of the national vote by party, you have to count votes in each district.

I get it that the generic poll by party has been a rough indicator of how many seats in Congress each party will end up with. I just don’t understand how you can say there’s a margin of error of a certain number of seats, as opposed to a margin of error in the percentage of the vote each party expects.

Agree. Public polls are always biased Dem. Break even is a Dem disaster.

American politics is pathetic. Political parties are nowhere in the Constitution.

Party politics ensures that nothing useful gets done most of the time. Almost constant stalemate.

Ironically, if Donald Trump identified as a Democrat, he would be beloved by all but the most far left of that party. And many on us on this side would loathe him.

Exactly.

Stories are already written explaining the Demon Rat losses.

Like “Mad Libs”, there are just some “blanks” to fill in for the media scribblers.

To support Trump, we need to get out and vote for Trump Supporters. Nancy MS-13 Peolosi and Chuckie needs to be embarrassed...

If the Dems were to only win a 2% margin that would not be a toss up that would be an easy GOP hold of the lower house due to clustering and our district drawing in the last redistricting cycle.
