ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The Town of Cimarron is under mandatory evacuations as the Ute Park Fire has grown to an estimated 8,000 acres Thursday morning.
Shawn Jeffrey, the Cimarron town clerk administrator, said they began ordering everyone to evacuate around 9 a.m. and Mayor Leo Martinez has declared the town to be in a state of emergency.
Councilor Matthew Gonzales announced the evacuations on a Facebook live video but urged everyone not to panic.
The fire started a little after 2 p.m. Thursday near highway 64 in Ute Park, NM, between Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron. It spread quickly moving to east, spanning an estimated 8,000 acres overnight and burning 12 unoccupied, non-residential structures at the Philmont Scout Ranch, according to Wendy Mason, the Wildfire Prevention & Communications Coordinator for New Mexico State Forestry.
That does not mean jump into your car and speed out of town as quickly as possible, he said. Were not in imminent danger. Were encouraging all members to start packing up their vehicles and heading out of town.
Jeffrey said the fire is about two miles north of Cimarron, a town of about 1,100. Evacuees have been told to head to the Raton Convention Center.
Evacuees from Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, which is under a voluntary evacuation, should head to the state fair grounds in Springer, Jeffrey said.

Did two trips to Philmont back in the mid 70’s.
Except of course the Boy Scouts don’t exist anymore.....
Posting this with ABQ Journal and KOB links so folks interested in the Boy Scout ranch, or those whose sons are in scouting, can keep informed on fire status.
Thankfully, there are no scout crews hiking in Philmont at this time.
From the Philmont website:
“Ute Park Fire Update: June 1, 2018 @ 9:30 a.m.
The Ute Park fire is estimated at 8,000 acres with 0% containment; approximately 12 unoccupied, non-residential, non-program structures at Cimarroncita have been lost. Red flag conditions are predicted for the fire area today.
Currently, there are numerous resources from State Forestry and our local and federal partners working to suppress this fire on the ground with support from 2 very large air tankers (VLAT), 6 heavy air tankers, and 4 helicopters. Additional incident management resources are expected to arrive later today to reinforce operations.
The nearby communities of Ute Park and Cimarron are under a mandatory evacuation order due to air quality, and Philmont full-time staff living in Cimarron have been released to care for their families. Philmont staff are prepared to evacuate base camp if the air quality decreases.
The Philmont management team is working closely with the New Mexico State Police and Incident Command to monitor the situation.
Ute Park Fire Update: May 31, 2018 at 8:00 p.m.
The Ute Park Fire is estimated at 1,200 acres and is burning on Philmont Scout Ranch property. Multiple resources are working this fire on the ground and air.
There are no participants on the property at this time and all staff have been accounted for. We greatly appreciate our first responders for keeping our community safe.”
Oh, yeah, forgot about that. Its just gender neutral "Scouts" now.
When you are on a 12 day trek at Philmont you might cross Hiway 64. That is when you call Cimmaron aand have the pizzas delivered
You are totally ignorant of reality and thus make a Fake Post
Made up and untrue
Did three trips in the 70s back when the Boy Scouts really were the Boy Scouts!
I can see that happening today. Back in the day you’d have had to have gone to the pizza place to make the call.
On 2nd thought, given what the scouts have become do you think Philmont keeps staff posted along the highway to act as crossing guards?
The DAV Memorial is of course at Angel Fire. Lovely area. I really hate to see this.
Ute Park Fire grows to 8,000acres, Town of Cimarron under mandatory evacuation(Boy Queer Scouts evacuated)
Do you mean to tell me there are people who let their sons attend that thing???
Actually, that is not necessary. As I recall, there is a tunnel
You have a severe mental disorder formed by ridiculous fear of what people will think about you at church if you don’t oppose the BSA vociferously
Our assistant Chief from our Volunteer Fire Dept—Part of Sandoval FD) has deployed to the Ute fire, with one of our tenders.
