President Trump criticized Canada on Friday for being “highly restrictive on trade” and accused the U.S. ally of treating the agriculture sector “very poorly.”

“Canada has treated our Agricultural business and Farmers very poorly for a very long period of time. Highly restrictive on Trade! They must open their markets and take down their trade barriers! They report a really high surplus on trade with us. Do Timber & Lumber in U.S.?” Trump tweeted.

Trump said in a statement Thursday the U.S. would only “agree to a fair deal” with Canada.

You can’t understand how increased taxes offset collections from reduced taxes elsewhere?

You have the mental capacity of John McCain.

Are you that stupid?

>> I don’t consider it foolish <<

When the Canadian gov’t puts tariffs on products from the USA, the GOC is forcing its own citizens to pay more for those products. Any such action hurts Canadian citizens.

So when the GOC harms Canadians by raising certain prices, the USG then should punish Canada by making Americans pay more for Canadian products.

OK. Now I get it. Perfectly reasonable. That’ll teach ‘em!

>> Tariffs were the chosen mode of financing the government of the first free nation in the modern world. <<

Ergo, it logically follows that tariffs are good. OK, got it.

>> Since the income tax was fraudulently instituted, we are no longer a free nation <<

I think it’s truly sad that you have such a gloomy outlook. And I mean that seriously. No sarcasm intended.

On the other hand, I feel very free and fortunate, and I’m very happy about living in the USA — in spite of the fact that I just had to pay an outrageously high amount of income tax to the feds plus two separate state gov’ts.

>> Can’t imagine what you could have against tariffs <<

It’s really not my job to educate you in the fundamentals of free-market economics. But maybe you’d want to go back to school to study Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Milton Friedman and Tom Sowell.

Doncha always love it when FReepers use logic and factual analysis, rather than indulge in ad hominem attacks?

tariffs are actually a sales tax.

the founders used tariffs because they had no other effective way to raise the federal revenue required to fund the government.

You are the one who can’t understand simple logic.

I’m surprised you can form sentences.

All prices in any country are inflated by the income tax burden, too.

Income tax burdens are far, far higher than that of tariffs.

Milton Friedman disliked the income tax over tariffs, but he couldn’t do anything about an amendment.

Everyone is “Free to Choose” when there are tariffs.

By the way, I own that book with his and his wife’s autographs in it.

What trade barriers has Canada erected against our products?

We still have no other effective or honorable way to fund the government.

The income tax is both effective and honorable

While other methods have been proposed, none can gain the necessary support to replace the income tax.

The nation has already shown that across the board tariffs are not acceptable. There will be no 21% across the board tariffs.

The income tax is not effective and it is not honorable. It taxes only people who earn reportable income. A national sales tax would hit foreign and domestically produced purchases and affect everyone much more evenly.

You evade the income tax by choosing welfare.
You evade tariffs by buying US goods.
You evade a national sales tax by making your own stuff.

Now, do you still maintain that the income is the most “honorable?” Really?

The income tax is neither effective nor honorable.

All that it would take to fix the problem would be for SCOTUS to make the correct ruling that the 16th was not ratified, since all but one of the states that took up the issue chose to first recreate the amendment in their own fashion, and then vote for their version.

It was then declared ‘ratified’ by the newspapers.

So because global warming legislation exists, it is honorable?

Wow -- Look at all those tariffs.

They're almost entirely on agricultural products. Most countries have these. Agricultural products are specifically not covered by most "free trade" agreements. NAFTA is no different.
