Maryland tunnel digger accused of killing pal feared North Korea missile attack

A man was charged in the death of a pal killed while digging a secret network of tunnels under his Maryland home he hoped would save him from North Korea’s budding nuclear missile program, according to his lawyer.
After months of nuclear weapon tests by the isolated nation last year, 27-year-old Daniel Beckwitt began construction on an underground bunker to protect himself from a possible intercontinental ballistic missile attack at his Bethesda property.
The digger’s paranoia was fueled by “rising international tensions” between the U.S. and North Korea, the lawyer said, when the Kim Jong Un regime began testing missiles with the potential of reaching the East Coast.
“There was nothing nefarious about his building of the tunnels,” said Beckwitt’s attorney, Robert Bonsib, on Thursday. “They were just a product of his world view.”

Except that this is Maryland. I'd guess they classified him as a prepper and checked his voter registration, no doubt republican. That's justification to prosecute here in the freak state.

A tunnel digging project on your own property with a willing helper that accidentally gets killed would be no different than a construction crew guy down in a ditch working on a water line getting killed in a cave in or a miscue by the backhoe operator.
This was actually a school drill. Just like a fire drill. In the event of nuclear attack, you had to hide under your desk.

Yeah, I remember ducking under the desks during drills in school in the ‘50s and early ‘60s.
Eventually you start seeing shadow people and digging tunnels.
It was the fire that killed Askia Khafra. How did the fire start? Why did the tunnel digging have anything to do with the fire? Why was Khafra found naked? The article is short on information.
Bethesda is a highly liberal area. This guy was just exhibiting the mental disorder called liberalism.

I remember that drill. I lived in Vegas during the Cuban missile crises. Nellis AFB was busy. I remember even then why we didn’t sink those Rusky trawlers and I was just a kid.

The guy is a kook who showed a total lack of regard for the safety of his helper. A 2nd degree murder charge is appropriate.

I went to a boarding school in ninth grade, on the banks of The Hudson River. This was during the period of detente, when The Cold War had thawed, a bit. As a peaceful gesture, a Russian trawler made a trip from NYC to the Albany area. One of my classmates was a model rocket hobbyist, so we came up with the neat idea to shoot one off, at the Rooskies. Fortunately, our lack of execution ability was equal to out lack of critical thinking skills.....
