PAHOA, Hawaii -- Lava continues to blast from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, and it's cutting off escape routes for people trying to evacuate.
The massive amount of lava in Leilani Estates is spreading fast. It has burst more than 25 stories high, and reaching temperatures of nearly 2,000 degrees.
"The scientific aspect of this is fascinating but it's tempered hugely by the fact that this is a neighborhood and people have lost homes," said Scott Rowland, a geologist with the University of Oregon.
So far 75 houses have been destroyed. Inside the evacuation zone, tensions are running high. John Hubbard, 61, is accused of opening fire and assaulting a neighbor who came back to check on his property.
"Stress is high, anxiety is high," said Talmadge Magno, with the National Parks Service. "They see strange people in their subdivision, and they're trying to protect themselves. It's a hard time for folks that are still in there.

They haven’t escaped yet? They haven’t seen the volcano ERUPTING & lava flowing for the last 3 weeks?
They’ll have a hot time
in the old town, tonight.
Now it is even hotter and more powerful have mercy! And get out!
but its tempered hugely by the fact that this is a neighborhood and people have lost homes More importantly, this is the most active volcano on the planet and it is incredibly dangerous to build homes on it. The same thing happened to Royal Gardens, starting way back in 1983.
one word, helicopter
This type of lava flows like bread dough. It moves 1-2 feet per minute at most.
I heard it was moving a football field an hour over the size of ny central park.
Global Warming ... but not the way they expected.
That is still only 5 feet per minute. If I heard 20 miles way from me a wall of lava was moving towards my home I would have packed up everything valuable and left.
Saw one sad guy a few days ago who didn’t leave via his back door until lava got to his front door. WTF? His dog bit him and ran off during the escape when climbing over neighbor’s fences.

Problem is though, turbine engines dont digest volcanic dust which is primarily glass very well. The dust particles will eat up will shut down a turbine engine in very short order. So, if those gaseous clouds become too massive the choppers wont be able to come in and rescue these idiots...
Sounds like his dog had enough of his mental idiocy.
I have been in a chopper in one of the big calderas in Volcano National Park. The air in the area that is currently under flow is clearer and should accommodate a longer flight.
When we were in the caldera the pilot pulled dup abruptly. She said, the sulfur will kill us first. We were about 5 seconds into surfer.
Jet engines aren’t compatible with volcanic eruptions, as British Airways found out the hard way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_9
If folks don’t want to get out while they can, folks shouldn’t risk their lives to try to fly them out.
That Flight 9 incident was on TV a few years back———horrifying.
Passengers were preparing to die.
.
A few years ago I rode my bicycle around the Big Island and took one day to ride the Puna Coast Loop out and back to Hilo.
It WAS a great bike ride. :)
With 132 blocked now there is really no way out but boat or helicopter.
The whole island is a volcano. Madam Pelee not happy. You need to leave.
Would you live on the side of an active volcano to begin with ?
