Harvard study estimates thousands died in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria

CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO — At least 4,645 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria and its devastation across Puerto Rico last year, according to a new Harvard study released Tuesday, an estimate that far exceeds the official government death toll, which stands at 64.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that health-care disruption for the elderly and the loss of basic utility services for the chronically ill had significant impacts across the U.S. territory, which was thrown into chaos after the September hurricane wiped out the electrical grid and had widespread impacts on infrastructure. Some communities were entirely cut off for weeks amid road closures and communications failures.

Jesus Christ. 4,645 people. Most everyone knew that the death toll was in the thousands, but not this high. No wonder our government has been so tight lipped about it.

I assume that all 4,645 individuals are still on the voting rolls and are largely registered to one political party. /s

And gee, who will they likely blame (likely not the corruption and incompetence among local officials that is probably that kind of a given in that area)?

Given the sources, I’d take that number with a pinch of salt.

Hopefully, PR will be more prepared in the future for a bad hurricane, given their location.

"...Hurricane Maria deaths..."

It was very unfortunate for the unlucky people in that storm’s tragic path. :-(

So at Hahvid, it now takes a ‘study’ to do an estimate? I thought all you needed to do an estimate was a pickup, a pencil and a ladder. That’s weird.

The population of Puerto Rico prior to the hurricane was 3.8 million. Assuming a life span of 72 years and an even distribution of ages. 52,777 people will die every year.

Unless you drowned or were crushed in the hurricane, it’s probably very hard to determine that they died as a result of the hurricane and not of natural causes. Especially when it comes to the elderly.

Very easy to demand of cellular carriers which phone #s went dark and STAYED dark. Hence the trying to pin it on CINC: the numbers probably ARE that horrific.

Liberals who were trying to make it into Trump’s Katrina now have more fodder.

Every day.

??? If 52,000 people died every day, the entire island would be dead within 3 months.

Puerto Rico’s government faced immediate scrutiny after initially reporting that 16 people had died as a result of the storm, which strafed much of the island on Sept. 20. That number more than doubled after President Trump visited in October, when he specifically noted the low death toll.

President Trump will be getting the blame just like GWB was blamed for the Katrina death toll.

So, if I understand right, 65 people killed directly by the storm, but another 4000 died as a result of the collapse of infrastructure in the wake of the storm. That’s a lesson unto itself for preppers everywhere...

The thing is, PR is in a hurricane zone. It will always be there... This surprises me. Everything there is built of concrete... You’d think it would be absolutely bullet-proof.

But I remember you pointing out that you were hit twice in a very short time, and there wasn’t time to recover before you were hit again...
