Uzbeks!
If you are a fan of perhaps the best comedy show on television, SCTV, you probably already have a smile on your face. Uzbeks were part of the hilarious SCTV universe from Canada that would be considered taboo today in our overly PC culture because they were parodied as being a drunken, shiftless people. Back when SCTV was broadcast during the years 1976 to 1984 the references to Uzbeks caused not a whiff of protest which says something about how times have changed.
David Menzies of Rebel Media in Canada explains why SCTV was so popular and, sadly, why many of today's SJW snowflakes would be incapable of tolerating it.

Done to the Miller High Life “If You’ve Got the Time, We’ve Got the Beer” commercial of the very early 1970’s (”It’s after the job, when work is done....”).
Yes!
My favorite!
We saw Splash on tv last ngiht and I had forgotten John Candy and Eugene Levy were in that! Omg were all those guys so YOUNG!!
SCTV is one of the most quotable shows ever.
A friend and I can almost have a conversation in shorthand courtesy of various characters and sketches.
“Hey, Gyorgy!”
“I’m on break.”
Check out the link at post 12.
They weren’t really making fun of Uzbeks. They were making fun of the Russians.
The end of SCTV basically ended comedy in Canada. Since then we got a bunch of gay comedy like Kids in the Hall.
The Sammy Maudlin Show just hilarious. SCTV could not air today.
Same memory, my mom would ask me the next morning what I was laughing so hard at. SCTV. Personal favorite for me was the Solid Gold Telethon. I also was a big fan of the addition of Martin Short.
Couldn’t make Bizarre either.
I fondly remember Super Dave Osborne and the Bigot family
As an insight to the intelligent writing of SCTV, the name of the host of “What Fits into Russia” is Felix Dzerzhinsky, which is also the name of the first head of the Cheka. “But, as you can see, this show will be going on for some time.” Then came Reagan.....
Indeed. One show was sponsored by “Mex-off”, a spray to keep Mexicans away. I’m sure John Byner has that hidden deep in a vault somewhere.
There is zero chance that any new SCTV will ever, ever be as talented, funny, innovative as the original crew. Why?
Because, regarding the incredible talent, some are gone and some have become unfunny in their elder years.
I will treat the SCTV years with the knowledge that it was a magnificent experiment.
IMHO
Lin Ye Tang! Couldn’t do that one today!
Know a friend who actually knows Dave, his Bob Hope was uncanny!
“the name of the host of What Fits into Russia is Felix Dzerzhinsky, which is also the name of the first head of the Cheka.”
Never caught that before. Sure do learn a lot on FR.
Martin Short added so much to SCTV as he did to SNL.
Great talent.
I still miss John Candy.
Absolutely not! Was that Dave Thomas? “Welcome to Doorway to Hell”.
It was “Chump don’ want no hep...” Sheet. (Golly)
How could you not be pinged to this thread ? ;-)
