German Chancellor Angela Merkel still isn’t showing any signs of warming up to the Trump administration, seemingly running her own European version of the #RESIST movement. She’s not on the same page in terms of military spending by her country, trade deficits or America dropping out of the Iran deal. And what’s the practical upshot of all this in her mind? Perhaps instead of the United States, China would be better to have a special relationship with. Or at least that seemed to be the message coming out of her trip to Beijing this week. (Reuters, emphasis added)
China welcomes German firms and will protect their investments, Chinas Premier Li Keqiang said on Thursday after meeting visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said Germany supported Chinese investment there.
Merkel faces a delicate diplomatic balancing act on her two-day China visit, which is clouded by U.S. President Donald Trumps trade threats and his decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal…
Merkels government shares many of the Trump administrations concerns about Chinese business practices, including what many Western countries have complained are state-backed efforts to pressure foreign companies into giving up trade secrets.
But Trumps America First trade policy, his administrations professed disdain for the World Trade Organization, as well as his withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, have pushed China and Germany into closer alignment, German officials say.
This isn’t the first time that Merkel has dangled this particular threat in our direction. Going all the way back to June of last year, she was in talks with China and spoke about how that nation was going to need to be a strategic trading partner going forward since Germany could no longer rely on the United States. Of course, given America’s lengthy history of both trade and antagonism with the Chinese, she would probably be wise to take our experiences into account before doing anything hasty. Remember when Sauruman decided to make an alliance with Mordor?
Trading with China is one thing. Everybody does it, including the United States (in massive amounts). But that doesn’t make them a full partner in any sense nor any less of a potential threat. They’re also not the most reliable trading associate, particularly given how often they absorb the technology anyone exports to them and then steals their intellectual property rights. And they’re not exactly a good ideological fit either. Merkel may be a seriously left-wing socialist, but the Germans still have a generally open society. China’s communist regime is something else entirely. Has Merkel forgotten her misgivings about China’s human rights record and aggressive military stance in the South China Sea?
This was Merkel’s 11th trip to China in her 13 years as Chancellor. Up until now, she’s maintained a relatively delicate balance between their two nations. It will be interesting to see if she jumps into the quicksand fully this year.
Update: Another view tweeted by Fox News, focusing more on Iran v. China.

Actually Angela Merkel was born in Hamburg
Her background makes a Chinese Communist alliance perhaps preferable to an American one.
Sour kraut?
China??
Maybe their time under their former Russian masters dulled their ability to rationally think.
Does anybody care? German businesses invest in the US because it is advantageous to them. Not because Merkel decides to do it or not.
Germany must be proud of THEIR HILLARY CLINTON. Hey Adolf, this is your Master Race. LOL
She's identified herself as being East German. She's a product of the East German political/educational/propaganda system.
She's East German.
Yeah, next time we won’t rebuild you. We should have let the stinking Soviets have them. How many billions and trillions have we thrown into stinking Europestan to rebuild, patrol their borders to keep the Russians out. Twice we spilled the blood of our men and women on the stinking Euro lands. The Germans, French, Dutch, Belgium, all of them spit on our flag, our troops, and us!! Pi$$ on every stinking one of them. Let the muzzies and Soviets have em. Then when they are slaves they will crawl begging us to pull them out of it again.
I only wish that our ambassador to Germany would say the same publicly.
That's almost $15 Billion in 2018 dollars, without interest.
And it doesn't include the billions we spent defending West Berlin and West Germany from the Soviet Bloc for more than 40 years .
Merkel is a communist and no different than the Germans that sold out the country post WW I.
She has brought muslim and third world reinforcements to crush Germany, THE SAME IS PLANNED FOR THE USA!!!
Sheisskopf
I just read that it was the Rooskies. Now it’s the Chinese. I am so confused. It’s all Trump’s fault.
Well, let’s close the military bases and see what happens.
Good. Hope you like General Tsaos chicken. Stupid kraut.
Makes perfect sense. China helps Germany look virtuous by hiding a lot of Germany’s poliution, including the almighty carbon dioxide. The Chinese don’t count the CO2 in their totals since Germans own the factories. The Germans don’t count it in their totals. It is nobody’s CO2.
Angela Merkel pushes Germany closer to extinction, so who cares. Also, it’s being reported that it’s also pushing her closer to Putin. Part of that Russian collusion huh Angela?
Frau Merkel, the Chicoms have absolutely no love of the muslims you have infected your country with or democracy. It appears you care not one whit who chains the German people down, Russia, Mohammed or China, just so long as someones boot is on their throats.
Merkel could care less now about showing her Communist Roots
Just dayum.
She’s as stupid as she is ugly.
They can’t even assure the integrity of the trade routes between them. It would not take a super power to break it, even Britain or France could do so.
