Royal Wedding Emblematic of the Decline of the Church of England
https://pjmedia.com ^ | MAY 19, 2018 | BY PAULA BOLYARD

The ceremony itself featured an African-American bishop who cited the American civil rights movement and quoted Martin Luther King Jr. as often as he did Jesus. The couple opted for a secular song, “Stand by Me,” performed by a predominantly black gospel choir—jaws literally dropped—in addition to old-school Christian hymns sung by the congregation. The traditional Anglican vows were altered slightly to allow the outspoken feminist Markle to opt out of the traditional promise to obey her husband.

While the acceptance of people of color into the royal fold is a welcome and long-overdue change, the acceptance of divorce and immorality by the Church of England is another thing altogether. That the Church blessed the union at all, coming as it did after the couple had been openly cohabitating and in light of Markle’s divorce, signals a radical departure from the traditions of the church headed by Queen Elizabeth, who inherited the title “Defender of the Faith” on the day of her coronation. That designation was first granted to King Henry the VIII by Leo X in 1521. Henry VIII, you will recall, famously left the Catholic church after the Pope refused to annul his marriage to first marriage to Catherine of Aragon. He later appointed himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and went on to wed five more women.

I’ve read Diana was a convert to Islam and chose to reject Christ (not that she probably ever accepted Him as Savior anyways).

Prince Henry (Harry) may have been presciently named.

Sarah Ferguson was there; in fact, she was one of the best-dressed women there. Learned a lesson, one supposes. But she was not seated by the Powers that Be next to her daughters, but in the main section of the church. The daughters sat up front in the choir with their father and the rest of the royals.

The fact that the 36 year old divorced woman wore a veil over her face was a little much and Harry looked like an emotional mess.

The fact is, Harry is an emotional mess, God bless him. And I was also very disgusted that the CoE officials and the Queen let her get away with the white dress and veil as if their meaning were simply visual, not spiritual. Even Camilla had the good sense to dress appropriately when she was remarried. I loathe the woman, but I really loved her wedding ensemble in every detail:

Family was often smiling and even chuckling and laughing.

Mostly at that over-the-top bishop's grandstanding, my FRiend.

I take it you think you are being amazingly witty and clever to keep trotting out this widely-debunked, nasty and vile rumor about Harry’s father. It has been put to rest long, long ago, except for people who enjoy calling others bastards and thinking others’ pain is enjoyable. You stay classy, hear?

Poor Princess Margret forced into a loveless marriage and finally divorced. Not a very happy life for that poor lady.

And it was her sister, the Queen, who, at the young age of 26, had to endorse that position of the Anglican Church, as she should have. But I think Margaret's eventual misery must be one of the dynamics underlying Elizabeth's reluctance to rein in her wayward descendants as regards marriage.

Diana could have put a Muslim on the throne of England....

That is not remotely possible, no matter to whom she would have remarried. She was not in the line of succession.

I didn’t know a person of color was previously turned away. The author speaks as though we all have a duty to marry someone from another race. Silly me, I’ve always thought you should marry someone you love.

Time for a rewrite by Peter Noonan!

Or by Peter Cook:

He actually broke the military code governing facial hair; UK requires men to be clean shaven while in uniform. Think about it: otherwise, they would have to permit the muslims to have their henna-dyed ungroomed beards and the sikhs their turbans and daggers, etc. He had to get special permission from the Queen to keep the beard.

If you are financially subsidized, marry against “your will”, and take a vow before Jesus Christ/God/Holy Sprit, then swallow your pride/sorrows and honor your vows. That goes for the females too.

I have read that one of the first things Queen Elizabeth did after the coronation was to change the law so that Margaret could never become queen if Elizabeth pre-deceased her.

Scroll a third of the way down the Wikipedia page on Princess Margaret and you will see that Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth tried to find a workable legal solution so that Margaret could, in fact, marry Townsend. Elizabeth was trying to help her sister marry Townsend. The Church of England and the Parliament were the ones opposed to the marriage to a divorced man with children. Margaret was only 22; Townsend was 16 years older—the same age gap that scandalized the Democrats and RINOs last year when Roy Moore ran for Senate. Different times, different degree of wealth, different culture...

Pardon me; it was not Churchill, but his successor Anthony Eden, who tried to help Elizabeth remove Margaret from the line of succession so that she could marry a divorced man.

I never said it was Churchill. It was Anthony Eden, a divorced man, who plotted with Elizabeth to remove Margaret.
