A new city has emerged as a possible site for NBA expansion.
One league executive told SEC Network's Jarrett Sutton that Kansas City will inevitably be awarded a franchise, as it's viewed as the NBA's most valuable market for league expansion, alongside Seattle.
The Kings called Kansas City home from 1972 to 1985 before moving on to Sacramento. The state of Kansas is well-represented on the college circuit, boasting the powerhouse University of Kansas, but the addition of an NBA franchise would come as a surprise with other notable options being discussed far more.
The city has an arena which opened in 2007 that can hold approximately 19,000 people. It's currently going unused.

In the first place, Kansas City has a pro basketball franchise - the KU Jayhawks. People aren't going to change their loyalties to an NBA franchise.
In the second place, the metro area isn't big enough to support three pro teams among the NBA, NFL, and MLB. There are a little over 2 million people in the 15 county metro area. That isn't big enough.
Finally, the Sprint Center isn't "going unused". It is, by all accounts, one of the most profitable arenas managed by Anschutz. Having to tie up 41 days per year for an NBA team or an NHL team would mean having to bypass on major concerts and shows. They would lose revenue.
Vancouver often gets mentioned, along with Vegas....for the next NBA franchise. And what about Seattle? Will they ever get another team?
Good points and with the average “Non-premium” ticket price for a small market team being in the mid-fifty dollar range I doubt KC could support a team long.
KC area is around same size as the Cleveland area, but San Diego area is bigger and can’t support teams.

Sounds to me like someone, or a bunch of someones, is/are agitating for a new stadium on the taxpayers’ dime.
KC needs a lot of things before it needs an NBA franchise. Like well-paying, full-time jobs first so people can afford the bloody tickets.
Just need to see some rioting, looting, and burning to insure the KC fans can properly celebrate winning (or losing) a Championship.

No. Sprint Center is 11 year old and is state of the art. Kauffman and Arrowhead just went through nine figure modernizations and were updated just as the Royals and Chiefs wanted.

You are correct...the 70s and 80s NBA were great...The NY Yankees of the NBA (Boston Celtics) with Parrish, Hondo, Bird and Auberbach with his cigar...great times...and no LaBron...
The Royals won the Series in 2015. Do you know how many cars were burned and stores looted? None. A few days later they had the celebration with upwards of 300,000 people participating. Number of arrests during the party? Fewer than five. This is Missouri, not Texas, and Kansas City, not St. Louis. We're polite here.
the problem with the NBA is that there are too many teams but the talent is not evenly distributed among them. When the season starts you already know the champion will be one of four teams. Four at most. Many fans will go a lifetime without ever seeing their hometown team win a championship.
Who has the big money in Kansas City to buy or expand with a team?
Cerner or Garmin money. Otherwise there is no big investor ready to go.
I would put money on St. Louis being that town as you have some really big money with the enterprise Rent-A-Car people
