Parkland school cop Scot Peterson gets $8,702 a month in pension
Sun Sentinel ^ | 5/15/18 | Stephen Hobbs

ot Peterson, the sheriff’s deputy vilified for failing to confront the Parkland school shooter, has begun receiving a state pension of $8,702.35 a month.

Peterson resigned and retired Feb. 22, a week after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he waited outside as Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

Peterson began to receive his pension in April, according to the Florida Department of Management Services. He can receive the payments for the rest of his life.

The 55-year-old Peterson, a Broward deputy for 32 years, was paid $101,879.03 last year, according to sheriff’s office records. Until the shooting, he was considered a trusted school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas, according to annual reviews of his performance.

Scot Peterson: School deputy goes from commended to vilified after Stoneman Douglas shooting On Feb. 14, surveillance video showed Peterson waiting outside the school as Cruz prowled the halls with an AR-15 rifle. President Donald Trump branded Peterson a coward, and Sheriff Scott Israel began an investigation into his actions. Israel said Peterson should have “went in. Addressed the killer. Killed the killer.”

After the shooting, Peterson said in a statement that he heard gunshots but believed that they were coming from outside of the school and not inside the building where the shooting took place.

An attorney representing Peterson did not respond to an email Tuesday requesting comment.

Peterson’s pension payments are based on the total number of years he worked and the average of his five highest-paid fiscal years, according to a state pension handbook.

Health benefits are not included in the monthly amount, according to a Department of Management Services spokeswoman. That information would have to be provided by his former employer, she said.

Nice work if you can get it /s. For what it's worth here's hoping his cowardice weighs progressively more heavily on his conscience with each pension check this POS receives, if he has one to begin with.

From the looks of his pension, it seems Florida is headed down the same road as Illinois. I wonder how old he is?

Government pensions are unsustainable. Just ask Illinois(e).

He is making more money in retirement than he made while he was working and he is only 55. He could live another 30 years.

That is a $3.1 million retirement.

In both cases you are by assuming the WHOLE state when you should be comparing counties.

Well, we know Florida is headed for fiscal disaster. You can’t pay out pensions like that to low level state employees and remain solvent.

Wow! This guy is only 55 and he’s making over $104k for 32 years of work. His pension is actually higher than his last year’s salary.

In what sane world is this remotely reasonable? How many taxpaying couples earn less than $104k combined? These sort of gilded state pensions are an insult to taxpayers.

Public servant my ass!

I’m sorry but being poor I think any municipal, state or federal pension greater than 5 grand a month is uncalled for. The more you make the more you should save for your retirement. Private companies can do as they wish.

Right.
Be sure to work extra hard to pay for p.o.s. types on entitlements and others on his relaxing double dip lifestyle.

Your tax money (income not available to you or your family)
provides them with comfort, time to take it easy, and a really pleasant happy life.

California as well. The huge pensions paid out for 25 to 30 years per person are bankrupting the state, and yet they don’t cut them back.

I knew several retired policeman and firefighters there. They bragged about how much money they were getting and how they could even get a job after they retired and still keep the full pension. Plus full medical! Many learned Spanish just so they could get an increase in pay. I call that sort of thing traitorous.

where I live the cops get a pension calculated on their salary for their final 2 years before retiring. So they have an agreement with each other. All overtime goes to the guys in their final 2 years.

The taxpayers get raped but they're too dumb to know it because the game is on ya know and the old lady can't miss dancin' with the stars.
