White Privilege in a White Coat: How Racism Shaped my Medical Education
Annals of Family Medicine ^ | May 14, 2018 | Max J. Romano, MD, MPH

Posted on 05/14/2018 11:15:26 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

In this essay, I reflect on some of the ways racial privilege influenced my experience as a white physician in training. While white Americans often think of “racism” as a social construct primarily affecting people of color, “racism” is a system of both racial disadvantage as well as reciprocal racial advantage.

Medical professionals are increasingly aware of how social determinants of health lead to important health disparities, however white physicians seldom ask how their own racial privilege reinforces a white supremacist culture and what effects this may have on our patients’ health.

Drawing attention to the powerful legacy of racial discrimination in medical institutions, I call on other white physicians to name their privilege in order to dismantle the systems that propagate racism in our profession.

Although systems of racial oppression take generations to dismantle, we must begin with an awareness of the problem. As I reflect on that bullet-riddled body and the callousness with which my colleagues mocked the memory of his life, I think of the important work we have left to do.

White physicians have an opportunity to acknowledge the unearned racial privilege that benefited their careers and actively work to dismantle the systems that propagate racism in medicine. I challenge other white physicians to speak out against the racism we have all benefited from and to work towards racial justice in our medical system for our colleagues and our patients.

Fun fact:

Emmett Till’s father was executed by the US army for raping Italian women during WW2.

Yes, I know. I’m not sure that condemns Emmett Till to death for whistling at a white woman.

On the other hand, he’s long dead and Dr. Romano is an idiot.

I just like to throw that out there; just a random bit of information.

Apple falls close to the tree, so to speak.

I think you are making an assumption, and when you assume facts not in evidence, you make an ass out of you and me, but mostly you.

Sad this man is a doctor.

He should give his ‘privilege’ to some deserving ,minority’. Of course he won’t do that.

Then you should have clearly stated how you felt about Till rather than saying he fell from the same tree which, again, implies that you believe he deserved the same fate as his father. You do know that the allegations against the father are in dispute?

3 MDs in the family. Our “white privilege’ earned us lower spots in the admissions and residency sweepstakes in favor of those with more color in their skin. We worked for everything we got, no free education or scholarships for the color of our skin. No special tutoring or consideration. Yup our white privilege really made the road easy /s

What I know is that the US Army found Till’s father guilty in a court of law of raping at least one Italian woman, and that he was suspected of raping at least one more, and was a suspect in the murder of an Italian woman.
