Oklahoma's Republican Gov. Mary Fallin on Friday vetoed a bill supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA) that would have allowed state residents to carry a firearm without a permit or training.
"I believe the firearms laws we currently have in place are effective, appropriate and minimal," Fallin said in announcing her veto of Senate Bill 1212, which would have removed the requirement for Oklahoma residents to complete a training course and demonstrate competency with a firearm before carrying in public.
The governor argued that the bill would have taken away the ability of the state's law enforcement personnel to distinguish between someone trained to use a firearm and someone who is not.
"Oklahoma is a state that respects the Second Amendment. As governor, I have signed both concealed-carry and open-carry legislation. I support the right to bear arms and own a pistol, a rifle, and a shotgun," Fallin said in her statement.
"Senate Bill 1212 eliminates the training requirements for persons carrying a firearms in Oklahoma. It reduces the level of the background check necessary to carry a gun," she continued.
"SB 1212 eliminates the current ability of Oklahoma law enforcement to distinguish between those carrying guns who have been trained and vetted, and those who have not."
The bill was supported by the NRA and several GOP candidates in the state, Fox News reported.
Gun rights advocates in the state reacted with disappointment after Fallin's announcement, calling it a blemish on her conservative legacy.
"She had a great opportunity to defend our liberty and leave a wonderful legacy and she chose not to," said Oklahoma Second Amendment Association president Don Spencer, whose organization wrote the bill, according to Tulsaworld.com.
Spencer added that he was "disappointed that Oklahoma rights were not respected."
Unconstitutional surveillance of the America people.
Those in power want to know.
In Oklahoma, the OSBI makes money from gun safety courses. They are not about to shut down an income. The Oklahoma State Police is DEEPLY concerned about any erosion in their power to act like highway robbers. The OHP is notorious for writing "57 in a 55" tickets on I-40, I-35 and I-44. You have a hard time finding an OHP car off the Interstates.
And who is going to determine if a citizen has enough training? The OSBI? Sounds like Oklahoma has a bunch of control fascists running Law enforcement throughout the state.
Out to pasture, IOW.
She should have seen the recent fiasco with the teacher's union coming and had a response ready on day one, IMO.
Swimming against the tide here ... allowing unlicensed carry removes a tool from the LEOs when charges are lodged against a perp. Sometimes charging unlicensed carry may be the only way a LEO has to get a perp off the street who is known to be guilty of other crimes.
Besides I would prefer knowing that the pistol packing dude next to me has at least been to one OC class that includes weapons handling and a small amount of training.
I guess evidence and the truth arent your strong suits. Please dont post your intellectual failures on FR. Thanks for sharing.
Its the wona’s way of saying, “I did it for the children”......My wife would say the same thing as she removed all restrictions on ownership/carrying......
Tell me about the problems police or citizens have had in WV since we established Constitutional carry several years ago.
...
Actually it was in 2016. Also, Vermont has had permitless carry since 1791. Looking at the success of those states is a good way to make your point.
Attacking somebody is no more than virtue signalling and not a good way to make your point.
Oklahoma also allows free college tuition for illegal aliens, if I am correct. How did this woman get to become the governor. Wake up down there!!!
I doubt he will win reelection.
Well, I join you swimming upstream. You don’t let people drive a car without a license. And this isn’t because the license bureau needs to make money. I think we need to add a touch of commin sense. If you know guns, like I do, then you KNOW people must be taught how to safely use them. Yes, use have the BRA certufucates. This bill meant NO SAFETY AT ALL. That’s not common sense, that’s actually “progressive” thinking...throw out all rules, good intent, but a disastrous result.
The US Constitution is the permit.
This article suggests it was a deception designed to allow congressmen to say that they voted for this bill, all the while knowing that the process had been rigged to make sure it never really would make it into law:

I see. Thanks.
(well, I don’t carry .. but nobody has any right to try telling an American citizen s/he can’t)
They can't. The session is over. Looks like the timing was engineered to make sure that the bill cannot be reconsidered. See The Perceived Plot To Deny Gun Rights To Oklahomans for one opinion, shared by many.
It will be re-introduced, probably next session, or perhaps after we elect a new governor.
So did the Chamber of Commies. Everytown and the Moms Needing Action poured money in, and it was rumored that they were recruiting out-of-state members to make phone calls. Because of the way calls to the Governor's office were counted in this instance, there would be no way for the they to be detected, let alone blocked. All done by design.
