Hockey is a sport played mostly by white people, and thats just the way too many hockey fans want to keep it.
As more African Americans move into professional hockey, they provide a barometer of just how rooted in racism the sport still is.
In Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Ontario Hockey Leagues boss was so concerned about threats against a black player during a playoff series that he requested a police escort to help get Givani Smith of the Kitchener Rangers to a playoff game, the New York Times reports.
Smith, a draftee of the Detroit Red Wings, had scored the winning goal in overtime in game six of a playoff series and then gestured toward the opponents bench. He was suspended for the rest of the series.
What led to his outburst? Take a guess.
I saw some of the stuff that was being sent in, and it was threatening in nature, and you could perceive it as death threats if you wanted to, and obviously the racial stuff as well, said Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie.
Yeah, obviously.
A lot of players of color go through this, Smiths agent, G. P. Daniele, lamented. Its almost par for the course. Its unfortunate.
The local newspaper said Smith had been subject to racial taunts throughout the series.
He took a lot of abuse on the ice, said Jay McKee, his coach. I saw him get cross-checked, tripped, slashed and take high sticks. He only drew one (penalty) call throughout the playoffs.
At this time, Givani respectfully asks for privacy, as he and his family wish to move on from the incident. His focus is now on being a Detroit Red Wing, a family spokesman said.
Uh, where’s the report about racism at the hoops? I guess I missed that one.
Yeah, I understand there’s a diversity problem in the NBA and NFL as well. We better get on that at the same time as part of this hockey deal.
GMTA!
NOTE: This stuff never happens to white players. [/s]
I forget who it was that said the reason blacks don’t play hockey is that no one can find a black man willing to be chased around by white men in masks carrying sticks.
And, your report on the NBA?
I remember Robin Williams talking about Tiger Woods and he said he was happy to see a black man hijack a white man’s sport.
It was crowded out by the racism reports in the nfl
This is total garbage. The NHL is rapidly filling with great Black hockey players. The article seems to indicate that this Black player made an obscene gesture to the other bench and got suspended for it. Now, after facing the consequences of his actions, he is crying racism. That might be more credible if it happened before he was unsportsmanlike. And sure, Canada is full of racists. </sarcasm>
(let me know if you want on or off the ping list)
I look forward to articles about the racist underrepresentation of Whites in the NFL and the NBA.
We can't even enjoy Hockey now says the lefties.
They can kiss my ass as it is the only sport I still watch.
Sheesh. How many of these idiots would have loved to have had PJ Suban playing for their team when he hit the scene some years ago?
I’m pretty sure it’s the bow tie. No self-respecting hockey player would wear one.
The days of Grant Fuhr (black) and Wayne Gretzky are long gone when these two hockey greats grew up playing hockey on local ponds.
It's all organized now, it's expensive and if you can't afford it and you're black, your kid plays basketball and or football.......
“and then gestured toward the opponents bench.”
I can’t even imagine how it must feel to be a Leftist when it comes to sports. I just know that an athlete is an athlete and color should never come into it. (Except for the team colors!)
Leftists have such tiny, ugly worlds.
It's all organized now and the stupid parents who think their kid will make it to the pros consistently fall prey to the promises of the youth travel teams trying to recruit their kid. And they are willing to fork out over $5,000 over the course of the summer just for their kid to play on that Super Good travel team...........
