I just checked Wiki and, of course, there’s a page on most common family names in the world: Lee (or Li), Zhang, Wang, Nguyen, Garcia, Gonzalez, Hernandez, Smith, Smirnov, and Müller.

Guess there aren’t that many Koreans in the world. China in the top three slots (no surprise). Interesting that Viet Nam is #4 on the list followed by three Hispanic names. Surprised to see a German name on there. Interesting that there aren’t any Indian names in the top 10.

That’s interesting about the top names; interestingly, mere numbers don’t tell the whole story. The whole story is the number of last names per capita. Some nations simply use fewer last names, so there are many more people per name than there would be in a nation like ours with a multiplicity of ethniciites and names. Perhaps India uses more last names per capita than do other massively populous nations like China, and that’s why their names don’t appear. I join your astonishment, however, not to see Gupta and Singh on the list.
