Get Woke, go broke . . .
The last Disney movie I actually enjoyed was John Carter. Their Star Wars/ Marvel stuff has been almost universally terrible.
Let “THE OPRAH” pay them back.
I find it more interesting that after weeks of hype by the MSM/Disney about "Black Panther" that it only grossed $202M. Rogue One grossed $350M domestic and $650M worldwide.
I’ll correct myself. I see Black Panther is $202M for one weekend. Over $1B gross.
Disney as a corporation will be making plenty of money. Disney Studios is just one of their many studios and they are far diversified from film. They own Pixar, and Lucasfilm, and Marvel, and Disney Animation. They own ABC Network, A&E and History Channel. They have a capital venture firm with fingers in everything related including GoPro. They own assets worldwide, plus theme parks, and real estate, and much more.
Now owning the Star Wars franchise they plan several spin-off stories delivering one new film every year. I am sure those will be making money. They will also likely end up owning Fox studios and its TV assets (but not the News divisions). They also get Fox Sports, which gives them a near monopoly on sports as they already own a slipping ESPN. Disney owns 30% of Hulu, and Fox owns 30% so the deal gives Disney control over the 3rd place competitor to Netflix. They will eventually move all their products off Amazon and Netflix and onto Hulu, or a unique Disney owned service. Hulu loses a ton of money every year though, but they could make it profitable by cutting cost of content using it as 2nd or 3rd line distribution point for films once they leave theaters.
All said, Disney makes about $9 billion a year net profit. Which I find interesting because of all the moving parts and high overhead and cost of goods. Consolidating with Fox will make some efficiencies and raise revenues and profits and yet... Apple makes 6 times as much net profit on a much more streamlined business model generating 4x the revenue. Let there be no wonder why AAPL is in no rush to enter the entertainment business.
Comcast could end up outbidding Disney to buy Fox, though it seems the Murdochs wants the Disney deal even at a lower price because of the clout and the board seats and the belief that Disney will be better for them long term than a pile of Comcast cash that basically puts them out of the business (other than news). But with $60 billion in cash they could buy into almost any industry, or, just be philanthropic for generations.
“I plan on watching it one day”
Before doing that, go read the IMDB reviews of it. I looked at the first dozen or so. All had one star.
The Disney rat is about to have another box office dog with "SOYLO".
Soylo! Lol
The last 10 Disney movies I really liked, sorted by date and grade I gave it on an A to F scale.
1) 2014 - B, Maleficent
2) 2013 - B, Saving Mr. Banks
3) 2010 - A, Secretariat
4) 2007 - A, Enchanted
5) 2006 - A, Invincible
6) 2006 - A, Eight Below
7) 2005 - B, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
8) 2002 - B, The Rookie
9) 2001 - B, The Princess Diaries
10) 1995 - B, Toy Story
I have to go back 22 years to find 10 Disney movies I can say I REALLY liked. How many hundred movies did they make the last 22 years?
2001-2007 is a bit of a sweet spot for me with 6 movies I really like in 7 years, 3 of the 7 I loved.
In the last 4 years, I can’t find even 1 single stinking Disney movie I found watchable, let alone loved.
Disney used to produce hit after hit after hit, even animated movies. Sure, they had their corny B movies, but no studio has a budget to make every film a solid hit. A lot of those filler movies were still watchable, enjoyable, and did not insult my intelligence and did not repulse me with Political Correctness and Multiculturalism.
Her PC, SJW, anti Star Wars, women's lib, anti white male, racist disaster "The LAST Jedi" (aptly titled) saw to that.
"SOYLO" will be the coup de grace.
They have been pretty bad since Eisner left. I’m not surprised that their dreck makes money but I’m slightly surprised that critics go along with it. I tried to watch Black Panther but it looked so cheap and poorly filmed.
Next up, a Disney reboot of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" with a gay Aslan...
Man that movie sank like a stone. Could'nt happen to a more deserving person - Harpo! Oops, I mean Oprah. Think producers will realize she is box office poison?
It was entertaining.
For the most part I concur. The one caveat I would offer up is Rogue One. Truly enjoyed the story.
***or a long ago favorite: Fantasia.***
Back around 1971, I saw a re-release of Fantasia. Just in front of me was a man, hid daughter and wife watching. Then woman had nothing good to say about the movie!
“This is TERRIBLE! I hope they at least show a cartoon!”
There was nothing wrong with the movie.
As winter comes to Texas, we seldom see snow, but the overcast days, cold weather and lack of color become oppressive and depressing. Each year about Mar/Apr, our VCR is pulled out and our copy of FANTASIA watched. It never fails to lift the spirits. Enjoy the movie now much more than when my parents took me to see it on the big screen. Not only are the stories entertaining, but the music and all those COLORS.
“I hope they at least show a cartoon!
LOL She must have been wanting to see Betty Boop or Popeye!
They took all the Judeo-Christian values out of a beloved children’s’ story, and turned it into Oprah-fueled paganality, and they wonder why nobody turned out to see the movie?
