A Fast-Food Problem: Where Have All the Teenagers Gone?
The New York Times ^ | 03 May 2018 | RACHEL ABRAMS and ROBERT GEBELOFF

Posted on 05/06/2018 9:13:08 AM PDT by Theoria

A quarter-century ago, there were 56 teenagers in the labor force for every “limited service” restaurant — that is, the kind where you order at the counter.

Today, there are fewer than half as many, which is a reflection both of teenagers’ decreasing work force participation and of the explosive growth in restaurants.

But in an industry where cheap labor is an essential component in providing inexpensive food, a shortage of workers is changing the equation upon which fast-food places have long relied. This can be seen in rising wages, in a growth of incentives, and in the sometimes odd situations that business owners find themselves in.

This is why Jeffrey Kaplow, for example, spends a lot of time working behind the counter in his Subway restaurant in Lower Manhattan. It’s not what he pictured himself doing, but he simply doesn’t have enough employees.

Mr. Kaplow has tried everything he can think of to find workers, placing Craigslist ads, asking other franchisees for referrals, seeking to hire people from Subways that have closed.

Yet there he was during a recent lunchtime rush, ringing up veggie footlongs and fountain drinks. He feared that if the line grew too long, people might get frustrated and not come back.

” my Rotts are grateful for dollar menu McDoubles”

My fuzzbutts just love a quick trip through the drive through. They’ve learned to eat French fries gently one at a time.

It’s weird isn’t it

When they are just out of the fryer McDonAlds fries are arguably the best

Especially back when they still used lard

In and Out are not as good

Culver’s are good as are Milos...a Bama special sauce chain

I love the intellectually lazy attacks on the Millennials and Z. It’s the typical “not my fault” attitude of the Boomers. But the truth is, this is the fault of the Boomer middle class giving this country away of their decades of voting for “free trade” and “right-to-work.”

For decades you Boomers have been fooled by RINO politicians that serve international mega corporations. You voted for open borders to serve their interest like clockwork. As long as the candidate talked about the ‘free market” “the Statue of Liberty” and “Israel’ you faithfully went to the polls like good little sheep.

You never took time to look at the crippling damage the invasion of tens of millions of illegals was doing on this country. You never had to deal with the dangerous situations in our inner city public schools where young white kids were forced to ride busses and sit in class eight hour a day, five days a week, with dangerous third world illegal immigrants and hardened gangsters from the ghetto. You never took time to look at it because you were living a comfortable middle class life in the suburbs. You could send your kids to nice schools. You just kept voting Republican and voting for RINOs like Ronald Reagan to ship the manufacturing industry out of this country and import third world invaders by the millions.

Now, post 2008, you’ve suddenly woke up. Those dangerous third world illegal immigrants and hardcore gangsters from the ghetto are finding their way into your what was nice middle class neighborhoods. Your grandchildren are having to sit in class with them and are now subject to their vices. Some of you have grandchildren how are producing children with these people. So now, you are finally concerned.

But instead of being men, and for fear of being called racists or xenophobic, you point the finger at your own. You point the finger at the generation that gave you your stupid facebook and finances you five trips a week to the doctor for your recreational medicine. You’re made that you failed to save during the greatest economic period of wealth creation in history. Instead of saving, you were more concerned with petit bourgeois purchases like, boats, tacky vacations to Hawaii, and home remodels—all financed by the HELOC, of course. You too find a way to blame this on the boomers.

As a millennial, I look forward to the white Boomer middle class feeling some pain. It’s time you guys enjoy the 40 years of your voting for open borders, free trade, and forced racial integration. It’s time you pay for rejecting economic and ethic nationalism. It’s time for those poor “immigrants” you took sympathy on all of these years to finally move into your neighborhoods so you can enjoy the “diversity.”

Next time you drive through a fast food restaurant and you see a 40 year old Central American with gold teeth and tattoos serving you, give yourself a big pat on the back. You did it. You wrecked the country because you were too greedy, and too selfish to take a stand.

Reasons why some teens won’t work for fast food places:
1) Eeeewww!
2) I’m NOT taking out my nose ring!
3) You want me to work Saturday night’s??? Forget it!
4) I sleep in on the weekends!
5) I could break one of my acrylic nails!
6) So you’re telling me I’d have to pass a drug test? Yeah,
right.
7) Wear that cheesy hat? Oh, I don’t THINK so!
8) What do you mean, I can’t smoke dope on my break?
9) Hey! Nobody tells ME what language I can or can’t use!
10) And mess up my welfare payments? Dream on!
11) I can make a WHOLE lot more money boostin’ stuff or
sellin’ dope!
12) My daycare ain’t open on weekends.
13) You mean part of my job is to clean the bathrooms?? Huh
Uh. Um mm. BYE!
14) I AIN’T servin’ no Pigs!

I’ve been more partial to Freddy’s fries and Burger King fries.

BK finally understood to cook the damned things and not produce soggy undercooked hash sticks.

Freddy’s is just...well...they’re never going to be dietetic.

I know - but a few years ago those summer workers were high school and college kids. I don’t know whether schools are starting well before labor day these days, or the students want an all summer vacation at mom and dad’s expense. Every parent whose kid worked summers at the beach will ell you the experience really matured them as they learned to work with all kinds of people and learned what it was to report to work on time and work 8 hours a day, five days a week. Of course that was when social media was in its early stages or before.

No, it was before you and your Boomer idiot cohorts completed destroyed this country with 40 years of voting for neo-liberal economic policies and unvetted immigration.

It has nothing to do with abortion, and everything to do with economics and open borders.

Billy, Billy, Billy - where on earth did you get all of this; “... destroyed this country with 40 years of voting for neo-liberal economic policies and unvetted immigration. ...” You are talking to someone else, not me. I have been voting as a staunch conservative since I was 21 years old and I am an octogenarian now. I took my responsibility to my country seriously and am a combat veteran of the Korean war. No more preaching to me young man or I’ll wrap my walking cane around your neck. Now go take your morning meds.

"Today’s teens are pampered little princesses and princes by their over indulgent parents. Work is a four letter word to them. Besides it would mean they’d have to take their noses out of the phones and that’s just a horrible terrible earth shattering idea."

That might be true in certain areas, but in our area, it was very hard for my kids to get jobs after school. They had to compete against illegals and the hours that management wanted them to work did not correspond to school hours. Summer jobs? Ha, ha.

Oh one last point, when they did get jobs (one in a clothing store and the other at a subway store), they did not get regular hours. Rather, they had to call in every day and ask if they were needed. They only got work if the regular employee did not show up.

Sure it does. Poor teens used to work jobs. I grew up poor and had to get a waiver to work as early as I could at 14. I wanted a job. It helps when you have a lot of nothing.

Open borders factors in as well but it isn’t the only reason. They don’t have to compete with 50 million American kids for jobs, that makes it easier for them, and easier for businesses and politiians to say “we need them for these jobs”. Also gives people a reason to psh for “living wages” at entry level jobs never intended to be career family supporting jobs.
